I am willing to bet we could widen the variety of wheels we use on our models here at TRaK. Let's see some ads from 1969 and previous , showing wheels and tires! Feel free to post any information about wheels we can use on Hot Rods, Kustoms, Drag Cars, Jalopy and Bonneville cars. I will get this started... I never realized these wheels were around in 1966. You can find these wheels in many kits and really aren't used that often. These are Appliance Apache mags I think they would look dumb on a hot rod, but good on a 60's Alexander Bro's style kustom? a 1966 ad and probably not Appliance brand, called StingRay

1965 Rader ad showing some wheels that I would have deleted off this board.....but now am re-thinking. I guess it's going to depend "how they are used". Check out those 5 spokes too, same as the Monogram Bad Man has.

Wow, really surprised to see the "mesh" wheels. I wouldn't have guessed that style was around in the 60's.
Now, despite them being period correct, if any of the 3-spokers like the one in the lower left of the Rader ad show up I think they should still be deleted. That is one aweful looking wheel, LOL!

I couldn't agree more! That is one FUGLY wheel. I don't care for the 5 spoke 990 either...but it does look "at home" on the BAD MAN. Other than that, I absolutely hate seing them wheels on models.

I don't like the 3 spoker either, however it does say 'dragster wheel'. I think it could look right at home on a dragster....

It's a shame this thread didn't go farther than it did. I'd contribute, but I don't have any vintage magazines.
BTTT!

Man, I thought those mesh-style wheels were an 80s-90s thing. Like 90s Jeep Grand Cherokee And the 990 5-spokes look like a skinnier version of late 90s corvette wheels. How about the Studebaker Halibrand mags from the Revell '30 Tudor? ...from 1963: www.studebaker-info.org/maa/cc1163/cc1163p51.html

The "Stingray" Appliance Apache look-alikes were made by Hollywood...who also made a bunch of other really cool looking "slightly different" mags. I love Apaches but I think the Stingrays look even better. The spokes go out closer to the rim, and the centers look a little cleaner. By the way, Replicas and Miniatures offers a set of Apaches. I can't remember ever seeing them in a kit, but they probably came from one...I can't see anyone actually sitting down and crafting the master for that. lol As mentioned, those fugly 3-spokers were fairly common on dragsters. The mesh wheels were pretty common too, if you were looking at road racers. People love to bag on the Keystones found in the Thunderbolt kit, but they're actually Keystone Kustomags from the mid-60's...not the Klassics that everyone associates with 70's street machines. Here's another Rader ad from '65...and a couple awesome wheel links. Enjoy! Classic Racing Wheelskustomwheel/vintagemags

The Appliance Apache mags were first available in kit form in AMT's model of the Mustang Mach 1 show car, matching the 1/1 car, so they certainly fit the time frame: Part of this kit was directly from the annual kit, the chassis & engine, I have that kit, though I'm not using the mages in it. Mine is getting a resin set of American Daisy 200 big & littles on it: IIRC, the old AMT 70 Monte Carlo kit, (not the 90s new tool), has a set of the Apache mags in it too. I knew the wire mesh style mags were available in the 70s, as a friend of mine had a set on his 74 Corvette. It turns out they were out in the 60s too, as the "Iron Horse" revision of that Mach 1 kit had them in place of the Apaches: Both the 3rd version, the Autolite Special, & the final version of that kit were identical to the Iron Horse & had those Appliance wire mags, & the final version had a drag racing option & was called the Super Stang. In the mid 70s, when AMT brought out the 66 Mustang coupe kit, they did so by combining the promo body, (as the annual Mustang coupe kit from 65-66 was actually a convertible, with the coupe roof an option you glued on), & interior with the rest of the Mach 1/Iron Horse kit, including most of the drag options & those Appliance wire mags. I built that kit & loved those mags on it. Not long after I bought a second 66 Mustang to combine with another kit & make a short track car, & I used the wire mags in it on an MPC 74 Vette to build a model of my friend's car to surprise him with & he loved it. Buster owned the 1/1 for about 20 years, & even after he sold it, the last I knew he still had that model I built of it. Some 10 years before he sold it he put the original Vette rallys back on it, & wanted to sell those Appliance mags. I let my brother know, as he liked them too & was looking for something different for his Monte Carlo. Jimmy bought them off Buster & ran them on his Monte for around 5-6 years before selling it. Back in October I picked up a glue bomb of that Mustang for $5 just for those wire mags:

Thanks Mark for that interesting bit of Mustang kit/wheel history. That Mach 1 kit is high on my grail list.

That Mach 1 kit is high on my grail list. That makes two of us - Man, those things are pricey... Round2's recent AMT-reissue of the "Deora" show truck includes a set of tires, which are a near-perfect match for these: (Technically it's just their new Goodyear Polyglas tires with yellow Firestone sidewall detail, but hey - they look great) The Appliance/Rader wire mags were also included in AMT's '67 and "68" Impala annual kits, along with some very nicely detailed Ansen Apollo 5-spoke mags.

Yeah, I got lucky in getting mine, $80, open, box a bit rough, but complete & unmolested. At current domestic kits retail prices hovering between $25-$30 average, to me $60-$100 for vintage kits that I know can't/won't likely ever be reissued isn't much different. I forgot about the AMT Impala kits having the wire mags in them, & I built one about 16 years ago! I still have the wire mags, Apollos & all the custom parts in my stash. That kit cost me $140, when a new kit was roughly $12 back then! The price gap between new & vintage kits has narrowed a great deal.

I think this applies here. The American Racing LeMans flat-spoke front wheels where a favorite of the Gasser crowd back in the day. I was fortunate enough to find (3) of these wheels (I understand they are from the Jo-Han '63 Plymouth). The wheels are rather small 15.6 mm outside diameter - that works out to approximately a 14" wheel. I opened up the spokes on a pair. Digging through my tire box I found a single tire small enough for the rims. It is a Pirelli exactly like those in the old Revell '41 Willys only slightly smaller. For the remaining single wheel I opened up the grease cap and installed a larger rim to produce a 15" wheel. R&MCoMD is casting these for me, however I’m not sure if he will offer them in his catalog.
