I went to a cruise night tonight and did some sketching. First up is a '48 Pontiac sedan that's been lowered. I talked to the owner a bit, turns out he ditched the straight 6 for a Chev V8, oh well. Now, when are one of you guys going to model a four door sedan custom from the 40's or 50's? Next up a little T-bucket hot rod; I go straight for the pen on my sketches now, no preliminary layout work with a pencil. This means I sometimes get it a bit wrong, such as the proportions on the Pontiac but with practice I'm getting better, in fact many of my straight to pen sketches have come out better than any of my pencil sketches. Nice, Dave! Your work gets increasingly expressive with each batch you show us, so you shouldn't be surprised if your "direct to pen" drawings are better than your more reticent "preliminary" sketches - but pencil is its own thing and I'm sure you'll revisit it for the benefits it offers... Looking forward to seeing more!

What you have Dave is a natural born talent that can not be taught, improved yes but you have to have it to better it. My brother is like that, he can draw, paint anything by just seeing it once.
Anyway, nice drawings and can't wait to see more.

Awesome sketches! The proportions may be off, but in a way that gives the cars character. That T looks peppy, and the more-door looks the ultimate fat-fendered cruiser.

Thanks guys. Tim, I really have little if any natural talent. I found the right instruction and practiced, practiced, practiced. I think I've done well over one hundred sketches at car shows, and most of them aren't worth sharing. lol Drawing is a learned skill, not much different from modeling really, in fact it's really more about learning to see. If you want to see more of my stuff take a look at my blog I just started this spring; www.utahsketcher.blogspot.comDavid

I guess you're right but if you don't have it, all the practice in the world ain't going to help. Like some of those people that try out for American Idol, they say they have been singing and have had voice lessons and guess what, they still can't sing. ;D

As an artist meself, I can say that...a natural "knack" goes a long way...but the basics can be learned by anyone, and even the "talented" need to practice! On the other hand, I couldn't sing if my life depended on it

Personally I don't see any real problems with the proportions in those sketches. They're sketches not blueprints! There's a lot of talent and charm in them so keep at it and let's see some more.
Btw; really liked those Wheeler Farm ones on your website.

Thanks Mike. I have at least a half dozen painting ideas based on those Wheeler Farm sketches alone.

Thanks Duane. I'm going to a car show tomorrow, it's probably a small one though but I'll try to get in another sketch or two while I'm there.

Today's sketches, The Ford truck is an F2 and actually has a flathead six in it, but it appears the engine was swapped and may have had a V8 originally, but the suspension seems heavy for a 3/4 ton but I'm not well versed on the heavier trucks from that era. The other is a '54 Oldmobile that if it's not my favorite local custom it's easily in the top five! I've admired this beauty for a long time and finally got the opportunity to sketch it. I'm sure I'll eventually attempt a painting of this car. It was kinda funny experience sketching it though. The owner and his buddies were all sitting nearby under their easy-ups and one of them noticed me sitting right by them and asked the other "what's he doing" and he said, "looks like he's drawing". Finally one of them walked over behind me looked, and walked back and said to the owner "looks like he's drawing your car". That was it from them for a while, until I finished. I set the sketchbook down to dry and started cleaning up and the owner came over and asked if he could look at the sketch. Well of course he could! He thought it was great, he couldn't believe how much it actually looked like his car and he took it over to show his buddies and I heard a lot of positive comments. One especially funny thing though was one of them asked if I drew it with the hood up, the owner said "no he drew the hood closed" the guy seemed to be real impressed with that. lol It was much harder to draw the Ford truck with the hood closed! He came back and we talked a bit about his car and he couldn't seem to say often enough how good he thought the sketch was. I gave him a card. Now this isn't a business card, I'm not a pro yet but I've made cards with a small original sketch on one side and my name, email and blog url on the other, people seem to get a kick out of them being original but this is the first time I gave one to a complete stranger. He went back to sit with his buddies and apparently he thought I was a pro. He showed a buddy the card and he asked if he was gonna buy something from me and he said he already had too many pictures hanging on his wall...oh well. lol
