Man it's dead in here! I'll do my best to rectify that. I did quite a bit of sketching at car shows this year but haven't posted any of them, not sure why except most of them wouldn't be appropriate, (wrong style or factory stock). I don't necessarily sketch at car shows to sketch what I like, what I like is not often conveniently located for me to sketch it, but rather I sketch at car shows for the practice. Sketching from life is as honest as it gets. Time is limited, distractions abound, and no relying on crutches such as ellipse templates, rulers, grid lines or tracing, (heaven forbid!). Unfortunately the car show season is over until next spring so now I'm relegated to sketching in the "studio". One advantage to sketching in the studio is I can take more time. I still avoid falling back on the crutches and it's my practice with life sketching that allows me to do that. I'm not saying my sketches are perfect, far from it, but compared to what I could do a year ago the progress is significant. I spent about 3 hours on this piece, so it's more than a sketch really but not quite a drawing, not sure what to call it. The car is from a photo I took at a local car show and the background is more or less invented. I title this one "Overaccessorized" for obvious reasons. Attachment DeletedDavid

Great job! I can really see your "hand" in this one. Your really getting rhythm to your style, now. I've always had the greatest admiration for pencil sketching. It's very much as you say, kind of a high wire act. Thanx for sharing this with us, and looking forward to more from your pencil...

David...as always...this sketch is the nutz !!!! you have me curious now...do you ever see late '40s early '50s custom show trucks great work on this sketch !!!! Thanks Duane. I took a quick look through my photos and only found three 50's trucks that could be considered full customs, a '50 Chevy and two Fords, both '56 I beleive. All the others are either commercial, factory stock or just mildly modified, little more than a bit of a drop and wheel swap. David

Thanks Chris, Bernard. The interesting thing about this season is towards the end of it all of a sudden people started noticing me and watching me a lot more. One of the last car show sketches I did I was about 1/3 of the way through it when I sensed someone was looking over my shoulder and then I saw his shadow. I've learned to just keep going, the shadow usually moves on in less than a minute. This one didn't, in fact after a couple minutes the guy sat down on the foundation of the light post that was next to me, I just kept going. A couple minutes later he finally asks me if he can ask a question. We ended up talking for a few minutes and he watched me to the end of the sketch, turned out he was the owner of the car I was sketching. He was real excited, couldn't beleive my sketch came out looking so much like his car.

Okay,I figured I should post some of my car show sketches '56 Thunderbird, factory stock. Attachment Deleted'58 Pontiac, lowered a bit, baby moon covers added other than that it appeared to be stock. Attachment DeletedT-bucket, the tunnel ram and wheels/tires aren't exactly trakable, but still has a mostly old school look. Attachment Deleted

This is the one from the story I told in the other post. The car is a restomod of sorts. It's a '33 Buick body mounted to a modern chassis with modern running gear. It looks factory stock except for the low ride height and the more moderl radial tires on chrome steelies with baby moon covers. Attachment Deleted

Cool stuff! It's interesting, style and self expression are logarithmic, by which I mean, when they start coming on, they start coming on fast. It's great to see your sketching style hitting its stride. It must have been a buzz to learn the "watcher" was the subject's owner...
