I know I've posted pics of this partially-started build in a couple places, but if I started a thread for it, I can't find it now. So, here's the new thread! In my travels around the internet, I've found tons of photos of '50s and '60s-styled F100 pickups, but not many with that late-60s Hot Wheels vibe. Then we get into the 70s with the crazy paint, fat tires, murals, etc etc. Thing is, a bunch of those styling elements were around in the late 60s, so why not build a truck that has that late 60s show-n-go flavor? The specs so far: -AMT '53 F100, re-chopped with the windshield header "forehead" reduced -front wheel arch re-located -shortened bed -dropped front axle from (? Maybe Revell '50 Ford?) -AMT Blue Streak slicks out back -Cragar mags all 'round -Ford 427 mill with 3D-printed Weber IDA carbs -Ala Kart gas tank I plan to create a diamond-pleated or button-tuft interior and tonneau cover. I have been very attracted to the idea of '65 Opel Rekord headlights (cibie style) like the ones Barris was using on his mid-60s customs, but I also created some ford pickup-style headlight doors that could look pretty decent. Both were 3D-printed. Have been trying out a '48 Ford grille, possibly inverted, and maybe the Wildkat grille border? Nothing quite seems to click there. I'm hoping to get a wider, more muscle-car inspired attitude rather than the usual dopey bug-eyed F100 face. I had started making some shorter side pipes, but now I'm kinda diggin' the long ones. Hmm. Paint-wise, I'm thinking maybe dark bronze, or orange. I haven't sanded the bondo on this one in over 3 years, so don't get your hopes up for quick progress, lol!!

My two cents. I like the Cibie headlights with the upside down 48 Ford grille. I' fill in the opening across the bottom of the body so that it is even with the two sides and cut off the portion of the grille that protrudes (the top of the actual grille). The 34 Ford bumper is something I would have ever thought of but perhaps some half bumpers (Corvette style) or nerf bars would look better. I don't think the fuel tank in the bed goes with the sleekness of the rest of the build.

I'm dig'n this one! Did you say the '65 Opel Rekord headlights (cibie style) were 3D printed? If so, were they done by you or someone else? I need 3 or 4 pair myself. I still have to chew on your front end options. I can't help but think there are a few directions to go that would just 'click'.
Where did you source the side pipes you have mocked up? I like them short in your rendering; but they don't bother me if left long either!

Thanks for the feedback guys! Ed-the Cibie headlights were 3D printed by me. I haven't made the lenses yet, just the buckets. Making lenses is going to be...interesting. I'll let you know how that goes. The long side pipes are AMT Lil' Red Truck. The short ones are 1:48 semi truck stacks attached to the turnouts from a Moebius '65 Belvedere exhaust setup that I obtained from a spare parts purchase.
Aaand I just realized I cropped the photos so you can't see the short versions that I made. I'll post those once I can get a pic uploaded.

I like the split bumper idea; in fact I had already considered splitting the center of the '34 bumper and shaping the pieces into two tilde-shaped (~) nerf bumpers. Hmm...
Here are the short side pipes made from 1/48 semi stacks and Moebius exhaust dumps:

I actually like the image at the top of the page, grille-wise. But that's a whole lotta nuthin', and I need to figure out what to put there. I don't want to do the Chrysler grille and canted quads (I plan to do a different F100 that way). A Mercury Cougar hidden-headlight setup would be close to what I had in mind, but I can't see making the effort to scratchbuild something that fancy and 3D printing probably wouldn't be smooth enough to chrome. Hmm. I've been surprised by how difficult it is to find something that matches the "vibe" that I want. I can feel it. Just can't find car parts that match.
*edit* Was referring to my photo, not the excellent reference images you have posted; thanks for those!
Hmm...you gave me an idea with the stock grille. Lemme go and try something...

I feel you there...........always have a blurry image in my mind; and when the actual parts hit the desk you just know what's right when it clicks. Btw, scroll back up and re-read my last post.....I was editing it when you replied.

It might help if you finished the grille surround area. Is the center area going to stay open or are you going to bring it straight across. If you do the later then you could try things you have and see how they plunk. Many customs of the era had grilles of hardware screen with kitchen knobs screwed on (not a big fan myself). You could always try one of the tooth grilles. A number of kits come with some variation.

Chris,
You'll have to follow along here in your mind's eye.......
Picture the diamond tufted panels you 3D drew for me that I sent you copies of in resin.... painted black. Cut a section to fill the entire open grille area on the truck and make mounting tabs in the opening to hold the diamond tufted panel in place and set the depth at the same time. Now, mount the cibie lights flush (either canted or horizontal) in there by cutting a 'slot' into the diamond tufted filler panel, and add a chrome grille (similar to your rendering) right on top of the panel in the middle; or some other floating grille bar design that works......possibly cutting the area out to fit the grille in like the headlights so it could get enough air flow if you were aiming for something more true to the real world. The diamond tufted filler panel will not only fill in the gaps behind the grille and headlights in a clean fashion while being the easiest thing you could do to fill in the gaps; but it will also tie in with the rest of the diamond tufted items on the truck like the tonneau cover and interior!

LOL. Hey Ed, check out what I was messing around with while you were typing that! I had already considered doing the padded grille opening, but I worried about it looking like the diamond-stitch grille panels that truckers put on their rigs in winter. It's a little too 70s, like it would go nicely with a CB radio antenna, haha. Love the idea though!
I always wanted to recess the Rekord headlights but didn't want to mess up the kit backing piece (with the grid pattern) so I took a piece of craft foam and cut holes for the headlight buckets, then bent some wire into a surround. Then a little Photoshop to make it all a tad more presentable and test out the idea of fog lights in the rolled pan. Basically inspired by 65-67 Mustang. I found another option for the side pipes (pictured)...and I might try yet another option: fabbing my own shields out of cross-stitch grid plastic to go over the red/brown MPC side pipes lying in the foreground there.
THIS is finally consistent with the initial vision I had for the truck. *EDIT* Thanks for the feedback and great ideas!
And funny enough, when I was researching "faces" to borrow ideas from that had a late-60s look and rectangular/Cibie headlights, I found the '70 Plymouth Rapid Transit concept car. Definitely inspired by what custom guys were doing in the mid-late 60s (I know, I know, it doesn't make the cutoff...but it's essentially the same ideas we find in a '67 Camaro grille, just with rectangular headlights. Ignore the rest!):

If you want another laugh.......I was eyeing up '61 Thunderbird front ends thinking that the basic shape and placement of the headlights would work out well if you could find something similar and less angled (the Thunderbird grille wraps in and downward; and is not quite flat enough)! But, it had the right 'menacing' look I felt.
