First off, if this isn't TRaK-able, since it's a boat, just delete. Inspired by a picture I spotted in a recent issue of Hot Rod Deluxe I started working on this boat this morning The picture came from the excellent series of articles chronicling each year in the life of photographer Eric Rickman. This particular picture is from the year 1964. It was just so outrageous I had to build something like it. So... I had to scratchbuild a flange to mount the bubble from a Monogram 58 Thunderbird to a Revell Hemi Hydro. I'm going to use the pretty nice Hemi from the Hydro kit, but to make it unique I'm using these sweet crossover injection tubes from a Boss Nova kit. Oh, it's going to be dual engined. Seats are from the parts box (I think they are AMT 56 Ford custom parts) because they have nice side bolsters to keep the occupant from sliding around while doing all those high speed turns ;D Still need to scratchbuild an interior floor and some other bits. It will eventually be towed behind something cool, but not sure what yet. Also, I need a better name

Way Cool idea! You going to do a Colony Park wagon to tow it?

I think it's KOOL as hell but I'm pretty sure Bob's said all boats are unTRaKable - good luck maybe it'll scrap through!

Probably right Mike now that you mention it. On East, West and Gulf coast fast boats were a big part of hot rod culture. In land locked states probably not so much. ;D

I have nothing against boats...but this is a "drivable" modeling forum , like on the road. I am torn between letting them be here though, because I have seen some killer boats. The problem I have most of all is that I don't know anything about them...I would have a hard time feeling out how TRaKable they really are. To me....it's about as cool as having a hauler pulling a drag car....and THEY are allowed here....so why not a boat? Becuase....I just don't know anything about them. Does someone want to be the boat police?

Yeah, I might want to be the "boat police" Bob. I had a buddy in the 60's whose father ran drag boats. Just like our rods, there is a certain "feel" that cant be described. I spent many a Sunday at the Oakland Estuary watching them run. I loved the creative names they put on them. I liked this guys father because he painted cars for a living, and always smelled like lacquer thinner1

I'm not going to push to keep my boat here if it causes problems, but let me shed a little light on the subject with the limited knowledge I have gathered.
In the late 40's, early 50's speed boating and hot rodding were directly interlinked. Many companies that made speed equipment for hot rods either started as making parts for boats, or crossed the lines by making parts for both. The full size Ford flathead and the V8-60 were widely used in "crackerboxes" and raceboats of the time.
Boat racing and hot rodding were so intertwined in the formative years of hot rodding that HOT Rod mag commonly covered boat racing right alongside the results from Bonneville and El Mirage, right thru the Gasser wars of the 60's.
You know those ribbed Thickstun teardrop shaped air cleaners and flathead spark plug covers? They were designed specifically for maritime applications. The ribs were made to direct water away from the carb intake and enclose the spark plugs
Now, while this boat is not one of those 40's flathead Salton Sea screamers, it is styled after one of the many boats that featured between the pages of Hot Rod and Car Craft during the 60's. And then for The Rodders Journal to have run a couple articles on it during their history, it must have some merit.
I'll get it if there is an outcry over this, and i probably should have posted it in "is this Trak-able" first. But, it's not like I slapped some little 10 foot fishing dingy with it's 5hp outboard in the middle of TRaK and said "take it or leave it" this has some true custom influences to it. Either way, I'm going to keep building it, and if it has to go, it has to go.

1) Freakin' awesome idea!!! (though think I'd be slightly worried about accidental carbon monoxide posioning caught in a bubble like that)
2) I completely agree about the direct link between hotrodding and racing boats! My main (and only) objection to allowing boats here on TRaK, is my TOTAL lack of knowledge about the development of racing boats, and thus, what is in fact TRaK'able. If we decide to allow boats, I propose that we (hopefully someone with more detailed insight can help out here) build up a MASSIVE picture gallery, similar to the "This IS TRaK'able"-thread, and encourage people not to stray away from the pictorial proof of what's traditional. We've previously accepted/looked past some hot rod builds, that were really pushing the boundaries of what can be considered remotely traditional, and I'd hate to see the same thing happen with the boats, should we allow them...
Just my $ .02

I have checked what years the AMT boats (3) and Revell (2) where made. The Revell Hemi Hydro and drag boat before it and AMT customizing boat kit, Rayson and the Kindsvater that followed the Rayson are all TRaK-able (by the introduction year) as long as anyone does not put in a later engine. The only one that is questinable is the customizing boat kit (Chris Craft) when using the stock engine.

Welp...I will allow them as long as they are built from kits that were done up through the 60's. I think it's the best way to play it safe. One thing that will definately get a boat deleted....the decals and paint job BEST looking the part. Any new paint scheme/colors or decals.....Vanish it will. Glenn is gonna be the water buffalo. Thanks Glenn!

Sounds sensible to me, I doubt many people are going to deliberately attempt to put a modern build of a boat kit on here - as far as I'm aware there aren't many to choose from anyway.
At least there's no rat boats... Are there...?
