Me thinks if you take the 32 Ford highboy, use the Roaster smallblock, hairpins, windshield, wheels and tires, and scratch limefire or blockhugger headers its really traditional.
Then youv'e got the rest of the Roaster to do something wild!

when did the "dimple die" thing start? is it not a way to strengthen the metal surrounding a lightening hole? or is this a recent trend? doesn't seem so high tech that some Grumann engineer couldn't have set it up. I can't tell you when holes in sheet metal were first done with the "dimple die" method but I can tell you that it was not a trend in hotrods until the last 10 years or so. It is true that this process stengthens the panel but most people do it for asthetics because it adds a finished look to an otherwise ordinary hole.

My thought on all the "dimple die" holes and even the holes in bomber style seats is that it started in the aircraft industry, ( look at inner wing braces) but even though there was knowledge of the technique, I don't personally recall seeing any pictures of such holes in real cars. Seems to me that for the most part, the "holy dimples" are a modern nod to aircraft-type industrial style. I did purchase a Rat Roaster kit, and a Todd Jones print I just bought has convinced me that it will be a great starting point for a AA/SR build based on the print.

Just in reference to the holes in the rear fenders of the Drifters drag car. Didn't look for a pic of drilled front axles in the fifties. Wife was grabbing me by the ear as we had to leave the house right then.

How were the holes made in the "swiss cheese" Catalinas? Punched or drilled/holesawed?
