OK so there really aren't 2579183 projects before this one, I think I may be just a little bit frustrated that I don't get very many finished.
I've worked on this off and on for several years. One time though, I cut off the headlight housings to use on another project, then ultimately didn't use them. So I smoothed the edges where I sawed them off, added spacers to make up for lost plastic, and glued the housings back on. I had long ago used the front custom grille shell so I took one out of a virgin kit. I've also found out that most of the kit engine is missing, so that came out of the new kit too.
The front bumper is a pretty heavily modified front bumper from the AMT 59 El Camino kit. It has been slightly Veed to match the grille shell contour and the front of the hood, which has the upper stock grille bar attached and modified to fit the shell. The bumper is recessed into the shell. The headlights will be custom units and will be deeply recessed into the openings.
On the side I've removed the front fender louvers, door handles & locks and the upper side trim that runs over the tops of the rear fenders and connects to the side trim behind the door. I have also modified the quarter panel scoops by blending the "chrome" trim into the bodywork and opened 3 scoops in the rear of this feature. This will be a little easier to see in the next picture. Little easier 'cause the digital camera has no depth of field.
In the last picture you may just be able to see the 3 small scoops in the quarter panels. I blended the upper fender into the rest of the rear body and made a pair of custom taillight lenses which are not yet tunneled into the fender. I'm using the kit rear custom pan with mods, and have a small pair of bumperettes I'll add soon. I'm not sure how I'll be doing the license plate opening yet.
I've been working on this while the putty and glue finish setting on the Merc with the padded top. Thanky for lookin'! Gary
