Boy, when the poop hits the fan....... OK, here's the latest. I painted the body a beautiful medium metallic blue enamel. Then I grabbed my "Wet Look Clear" LAQUER and ruined the paint job. I hope there's some way to salvage it. There's a multitude of cracks, of course. How deep does it go? I don't know yet.

You never shoot lacquer over enamel. Exceptions are the old Testors Glosscote & Dullcote. Otherwise you'll likely ruin the color coat.

I honestly thought they were calling it laquer as a gimmick and that it wasn't really that. Lesson learned!

I honestly thought they were calling it laquer as a gimmick and that it wasn't really that. Lesson learned! Because of the different VOCs, (volatile organic compounds), in each type of paint, doing that would break all kinds of laws. If it's lacquer, it has to be labeled as such, same with enamel paint.

Now here's the truly big question. Do you guys think I can strip the paint off? Laquer over enamel! I don't care if the putty also comes off. Let's hear it!
Thanks, Gary

If you don't waste more time letting the clear coat cure you might have a shot here.........start stripping! LOL! I would not use Easy Off oven cleaner here.........or brake fluid. I would go for the Purple Power degreaser. It's easy on styrene and resin both; and I've had better success with it in recent years than Whestles Bleche White since they screwed with the formula (on the Bleche White). It might take a couple of days or even a week since you will surely end up stripping (dissolving) the enamel paint color underneath the clear..........don't see a way to avoid that.

The Purple Power won't take off the clear lacquer top coat. To remove both the lacquer & the enamel I'd use Citristrip in the gel form. It can be found in the paint area at Walmart & works on lacquer, enamel & acrylic. Otherwise 91% alcohol will take off the lacquer & Purple Power will take off the enamel.

Yeah, I'm very happy! 99% of the paint and putty are gone but I haven't scrubbed it with a brush yet. I'm confidant that It will clean off completely though. The first picture is of the Dollar Store cleaner that I used. Boy does that stuff work great, and for only a buck a quart. Not bad! Hosted on FotkiNext, I took just for my reference, is the crackle finish I achieved. All it needed prior to the clear laquer was to avoid the laquer and use enamel. This lesson is definitely learned and I won't be able to finish it this year, sadly. Hosted on FotkiI used a piece of strip styrene to scrape the paint off and it worked like a charm without damaging the body. The laquer also left no damage thankfully. Hosted on FotkiHosted on Fotki
