That 312 looks perfect in there, good choice. Great build all around so far. Looking forward to seeing where you go with this one. Thanks, Ron! It may not go too far for a bit while I work on an interior for the '58 Fairlane.

I am loving the Thunda-berd engine in your truck! I was going to suggest it might also look cooler with the dual quad intake from the Revell '57 Ford Custom sedan kit; but I am not sure if you would be pinched for clearance back at the firewall; and it appears that you are keeping with all vintage era derived parts on this one like most of the others........with the exception of Evergreen strips, v-groove sheet, wire mesh, etc. This is why your builds pull off that convincing 'built by an expert in the '60's' look! Thanks, Ed! I'm probably going to save that dual quad setup for a '57 Thunderbird I've got in mind that will take inspiration from Doane Spencer's '55 'Bird and the '57 "Battlebird." Would love to be able to do it with dual McCulloch superchargers. Anyway, yeah, the 'Bird engine is almost a no-brainer for this swap, and I didn't want get too crazy further with swaps or added detail (though I may not be able to live with AMT's missing valve cover bolts!) I do try to keep most of my parts sources from vintage or reissued kits, in part because I like that stuff and, more importantly, 'cause my mental data of car kit parts gets thin after about 1962 or '63! Here are some Thunderbirds that I really like........might give you some more ideas for your T-bird build. Hosted on FotkiAnd my favorite: Hosted on FotkiYep, this black one is the Doane Spencer car, and will be my primary inspiration. And the Hemi is also a possibilty as well. There's a great tech article in a circa 1958 Hot Rod in my collection on swapping a 392 into a '56 T-bird, even had Hilborn injection. IIRC, ths only the outside modification was a little dome in the hood to clear the magneto.

I can't wait until you start on that Thunderbird build! I love '55-'57 T-birds; and they simply do not get the attention they should in the 1:1 world or the hobby! I think part of the reason I have such as soft spot for them is because my dad used to bring home a '55 and a '57 T-bird a friend of his owned every once in a while in exchange for washing and waxing them. He'd take me out for a spin in them (as well as the '68 Shelby GT 500 fastback Mustang his friend owned) when I was somewhere around 10-12 years old. That Shelby Mustang definitely left a mark on me after smelling burnt rubber and my dad rowing through all 4 gears!

I'm diggin' what you're doing with this pickup! I used the highly detailed engine from the '60 Starliner in my '53 pickup, keep Ford engines in Fords!

Ed, what you said. - in other words, I'm quoting you without all the great pix, there's enough of them already.
That Black Beauty, looks so much different with those tail lights and different bumper (I think). The red one with the Hemi, I know I've seen that one in print, either a Hot Rod yearbook or one of the Petersen Pub's Ford books, maybe Rod & Custom, can't put a finger on it. I've always loved the look of that car right down to the Hemi taking up most of the engine bay! Maybe, I've read too many car mags over the years.,,, nah!!

Let's take the digression from pickups to T-birds one step further ('tis my thread after all!) It sure looks like the builder of the red car had this copy of HRM tacked up on his garage wall! The cover shot is serious eye candy!

Thanks for digging that out and sharing the pages of the article John! I haven't seen this one before ironically! However, I have seen another similar article on stuffing Ford's 406 into the early Birds; and on a slightly different note, Holman Moody cramming Ford's 427 into a '63-'64 Corvette coupe before GM was putting a big block in them themselves.

Thanks for the article, John. A few things jumped out at me, including the assertion that the car is "very smooth" when driven on the street with the injector setup, the mag-drive fuel pump, and how the front injector stacks were shortened to fit under the hood. What a beast

While we're at the subject of modified T-birds, does anone remember a sixties' built '57 with a turbocharged Ford 427 with a six-pack setup relocated to the back of the driver's side of the engine compartment? I know, I've saved some pictures of it, but now I can't find them...

I probably saw it here, on the HAMB, or somewhere on Facebook.

There was one with a turbocharged Hemi. I came across that issue of Hot Rod the other week when I was looking for boat stuff. I think it had three four barrels in its final incarnation (which I posted in the 'So You Didn't Think it Was Done' thread), but two four barrels in the mag article.
