Alright - About damn time I got started...
For my first build in the contest I've chosen not only a subject - but a model, that could in fact had been on display at the GNRS in the sixties.
I've always admired the first issue of Revell's '55 Chevy and even went as far as buying one just for display in my living room.
There's a common consensus, that the box-art was more than likely inspired by this picture:
This (yuck!) is my starting point:
The idea is to build a car closely resembling the box-art car, though not an actual box stock (gasser) version.
Instead my version will incorporate parts from other early sixties' Revell kits.
First order business was correcting the mold alignment flaws on the rear fenders, and sanding the chassis/floor assemby to actually fit within the bodyshell:
And now for the interesting parts: The '55 kit contains two engines - A stock Chevy 265 smallblock and a blown 409 "bowtie" block. However neither of them fit together very well, so they're better left in the parts box. Instead I've turned my attention to the equally fiddly, but much nicer Chevy 283 (actually the former Parts Pack "Corvette 327" engine) included in Revell's old '57 Chevy.
Of course no gasser is complete without a B&M "Hydro Stick" transmission, and since I also needed a suitable set of wheels/tires to replace the eighites' atrocities in the HotRod-Series kit, I turned my attention to Revell's "Beatnik Bandit", which luckily also included a late fifties Pontiac/Olds rear end to replace the Chevy's ugly lump of a rear axle:
