Ok this one isn't officially on the bench…yet. (Admins, feel free to remove it from the forum if need be) I have lots of projects in the works but after seeing this illustration by Keith Weesner I had to add it to the list of "Must Build" projects. His art is great but this one completely stopped me in my tracks. I made a mental list of what parts would be necessary given my current stash. Feel free to add to this list or correct me if other parts would work better. If this post stays up, I will re-visit it as the build progresses. For now, it's a conversation starter. The inspiration: The parts list: Body: Revell 29 ford pickup or Monogram Blue Bandito Frame: Revell 29 Roadster Front wheels/tires: Rat roaster w/ whitewall decals. Rat Roaster front wheels Rear wheels/tires: Monogram Blue Bandito Front axle: Revell 29 roadster Rear end/axle: Revell 29 roadster Front wishbones: Revell 32 coupe Rear torsion bars: Revell 32 coupe Steering box/drag link: Revell 29 roadster Engine: Buick nailhead from Revell 29 roadster (because the headers are cool and the SBC is overdone) Air scoops: Tweedy Pie Grill: Linberg 34 pickup (in a 32 shell?) Headlights: Revell 32 coupe Seats: tuck and roll from Blue Bandito or other similar tuck and roll buckets Trans Tunnel: tuck and roll piece from AMT 49 ford/merc? Brakes: finned Buick drums from Revell 29 roadster Bed cover: scratch built tuck and roll Shifter: scratch built w/ resin skull knob Steering Wheel: Tweedy Pie Paint: Body - Testors one coat Fiery Orange Frame - Tamiya bright white

This is a style of model that used to be more popular here on TRaK but has faded in recent years. There was a version of this done by one of my favorite modelers here a few years back, but now long gone. His name was Dave Nelson and he went by the "handle" of racer13. It can be found here:
His was a little rusty and had a flathead, unlike the drawing. Yours sounds cool and would be quite different, and yet true to the spirit. Do It! Kandy Apply Krate by racer13:

Very kool Bernard. Thanks for digging that one up. I like it alot. I'm picturing one built as an over-the-top show rod with chrome for days

Any of Wiesner's "Show Rod" illustrations would certainly be Trakable in my opinion. Keith is a stickler for accuracy in his early high quality Hot Rod art. I have a couple of his prints, they fit in over at the HAMB with zero discussion, so I'm not even sure why there would be any over here. Keith Wiesner was among those who were advocating the "Period Correct Traditional Hot Rod" look from the beginning, his illustrations just aren't a bit rusty or ratty, they're straight out of a pre 1966 Hot Rod Magazine.

Travis, I'm not sure why you think your thread would be pulled. Weesner style builds are warmly welcomed here, and have been featured many times My club, KKIM, has an ongoing Weesner Challenge, which is actually endorsed by Weesner himself. I've built three Weesner builds myself, one even signed by the artist. Here's a link that shows just a sample of what's been built by the club so far... KKIM Weesner ChallengeAs far as your build, since you asked for suggestions, here's my thoughts. I know it's your build, so feel free to ignore my thoughts. But his artwork is so cool,I'm a big advocate for sticking as close to his art as possible. front wheels- I swear there is a set of wheels available that matches the artwork, or is at least extremely close. Anyone think of it? Brakes- Note the apparent absence of front brakes. Using the Buick finned brakes out back sounds great, but note the cool detail that they are painted body color to highlight the wheels. engine- While I am a big fan of nailheads, I think you can get a little closer to the artwork. To me it looks like a single center exhaust port, so how about the Olds or Caddy? Revell parts pack Caddy has a 4 carb intake too. Anyway, between your talents and your choice for inspiration, I'll definitely be following along. Just don't make us wait tooooo long

Thanks Craig, The only reason I thought it may be pulled was there is no actual work done yet. Just ideas.
Those front wheels are in the Rat Roaster kit but the tires are pretty small and do not have whitewall inserts or decals.
After going through my stash last night I think I may stick with the Monogram Blue Bandito as a base. The tires fit the bill and it has a Caddy with 6 carbs. (not 4 like the illustration) My twist on it would be to use the 5 spoke mags on all 4 corners and use the 6 carb set up for induction. Unless I can score a parts pack caddy somewhere.
The Tweedy Pie also has a great Caddy with those sweet air scoops.
I'm also curious about the Tamiya metallic orange. it looks more copper than the Testors one coat Fiery Orange.

Those spindle mount front wheels can be found in the Attempt 1 kit. FWIW, the engine looks to me like it's meant to represent a Pontiac. Edit - Tweedy Pie has a small block Chevy engine. Second edit - I have one failed paint job with the Tamiya metallic orange. It's translucent, so you need to spray it over a silver or gold base for best effect. I sprayed it over primer and it looked bad, so I stripped it.

Stu thanks for the correction. The Tweedy Pie is a corvette engine, not a Caddy, my bad. Since the front of the block is hidden by the front tire in the illustration, I suppose a Caddy or a Chevy would work. Heck, the Ford engine in the AMT Vicky would work too. Lot's of options here. Again, any and all input is welcome at this stage.
Since the Atempt 1 is not in my stash and pretty pricey, I think I will stick with 40 Ford brakes or finned Buick brakes up front. Not true to the illustration, but I wouldn't feel safe seeing that pretty girl hauling ass with only rear brakes!
Thanks for the paint tip. Tamiya metalic orange over a gold base with tons of clear on top may look nice.

The Revell parts pack Caddy motor has a 4-carb setup and would fit in with the Weesner style. I once asked Keith if the reason he drew early Olds and Caddy motors was because there were only 3 exhaust ports to draw; he stood there grinning!

To me, the front wheels looks like those from the now unobtainium Revell '30 Ford coupe. I can't remember if they were the fronts or rears that looked like those. Here's a link to a build I did with the Tamiya Metallic Orange over their gold. trakinscale.proboards.com/thread/17429/50-ford-hot-rod-round

Love this idea. Doesn't the AMT '32 Phantom Vicky have front wheels in that style, in a larger diameter that could be appropriate to Weesner proportions?
I love Weesner's art. I have parts set aside to build a '29 in his style (Red Ram, skinny firestones, chrome wheels, candy paint etc)

To me, the front wheels looks like those from the now unobtainium Revell '30 Ford coupe. The nice thing is those fronts are now available from Drag City Castings... But those and the ones Chris mentioned from the Phantom Vicky are kinda close, but like Stu mentioned, the ones in the Attempt one kit are about perfect, and they even have the backside detail.

I pulled parts last night. It will not be a replica of the illustration, but very close. I've got 5 spoke mags on all 4 corners w/ whitewalls. I think I'm going with the SBC from the Tweedy Pie unless I come across a Parts Pack Cadillac mill. I will post pics soon.

I've never owned the Attempt 1 or saw the wheels on it. But, those do look to be the perfect match. Looks like it has an interesting set of rear wheels too.

I have been collecting parts and establishing the engine position, frame modifications, etc. More on that later. For now I was wondering if anyone could produce this lettering as a decal in scale, in white. I recall a TRAK member being able to produce white decals, but I could be wrong.
