Heeeeyyy!!! It's not just me! This is what shelved my Revell '40 project that I started back in...2014 or so. I posted this pic in frustration at the time, but never got around to fixing it. Nobody seemed to know what I was babbling about.
The wheelbase is just too damn short!

Now this is really valuable, to me at least. I have collected a bunch for further builds as I LOVE 39 Fords. Tnx. Sorry that I can't help right now, but got the message and will be aware!

Wow, that is frustrating! Wish I could help with first-hand recommendations. I know a friend of mine wound up using the tried-and-true AMT chassis underneath his Revell '40 specifically to avoid dealing with the fiddly Revell chassis and it worked beautifully. There's something to be said for simplicity!

It's good to know that I'm not the only one who's had this issue. It's obviously a defect in the kit. I wonder if the stock version has the same issue or if it's where Revell modified the chassis to turn it into the rod version? I don't have the stock version to check the differences.
After I cooled off, I did some measuring and determined that the rearend needed to be moved back 3mms. Before I cut the cross member loose, I got rid of the bar that connects the springs. It's not needed anyway as the springs actually mount to the cross member. I then cut the cross member loose, cut a new notch in the frame rails 3mms back and glued it back in place. This locates the cross member right up against the front of the gas tank. Once the cross member is dried well, I'll do another mockup and see how it goes. I'm going to have to find a set of longer training arms or lengthen the ones I have. Fingers crossed. If it's still messed up, it may not survive the next mockup!

If that doesn't work. try Froghawks friends solution and use an AMT chassis. The body is too nice not to save.

I'm glad you seem to have found a solution, even if it's frustrating to have to make the changes.
I'll be cutting into mine, too...I just couldn't believe that nobody was talking about it, considering how obsessive modelers seem to be about every little detail. I googled a bunch of photos and found a couple '40 builds that seemed to have the same problem, but nothing that looked as egregiously wrong as my kit. I find it hard to believe that infamously picky modelers have just been quietly cutting up the frame of every Revell '40 they build, without mentioning it online! I feel vindicated. Haha.
This model is gonna be sweet. Don't give up on it!

This model is gonna be sweet. Don't give up on it! My thoughts exactly Chris! I never saw this issue mentioned in any build I ever looked at on any forum. But, I missed your post about it somehow. I did see some that the wheelbase looked off like they had fudged it both ways. I did finally get the rear centered properly. But, it wasn't without some drama. I moved the cross member back 3mms, tacked it together, mocked it up and had the opposite problem. Too far back! WTF! Took it back apart, moved it forward 1.5 mms, tacked it together and bingo! So, the magic number is 1.5 mms rearward to get the rear centered. Maybe now I can make some decent headway. I still have to make motor mounts and a set of headers before I can start painting on the chassis. And I still don't have a wheel and tire setup nailed down.

I've built two of these Revell 40's to completion, one coupe and one convertible. I don't have any straight on side photos of the convetible, and it's in storage so i can't pull it out. And there's a possibility the convertible could be different from the coupe anyway, so it's not apples to apples. But here's the only coupe I've finished. It doesn't seem to exhibit the issue, and I don't recall making changes to fix the wheelbase. Maybe ask around the bigger forums to see if anyone else has run into this? Because, like you've said, I don't recall anyone raising this issue before. Stu, avert your eyes, this build features Pegasus chrome reverse...

Craig, yours looks like it should! My first thought was that I had done something wrong like glued the cross member in wrong. But, I double checked it with the instructions and didn't see anything I did wrong. There's location points for everything. The only thing I can think of that I maybe did wrong was place the trailing arms between the notches on the rear end. But, the trailing arms fit perfect in that location. What's weird is how moving the cross member 3mms caused the opposite problem when it should have placed them correctly. I think I did something wrong. Just don't know what I did wrong.

This all interesting info. I have not built the Revell 40 yet. I don't know if I will ever get to it. So much plastic , so little time. And yes I am retired and should have nothing but time!
