I always thought those little Pirelli tires were too small for anything but a T, but they look AOK here! This build is looking tough as hell. Can't wait to see the engine all installed. Lots of Hot Rods ran the 135-15 tire on the front, same tire the VW guys were running on the early “California Look” Bugs in ‘67 - 70’s timeframe. They were the lowest profile combination around, think you’ll find that size on some altered, gassers and smaller drag cars. So they are perfectly appropriate size for a front, rear sizes were like 185-15 to 205-15’s Pirellis. The tire shop I worked at in high school was owned by a hot Rodder so lots and lots of hot rods came in all the time for tires and wheels.

Good info Skip! I wasn't going on history, just "gut feel". Now I have a great excuse to use those pirellis on everything

I like the work you put into detailing the engine. I hate to say it, but that grille decal is really putting a damper on the whole thing for me..........just seems too 'Hot Wheels'-esque.....or chincy; especially with the oversized hood pins depicted on the grille decal. A nice black washed stock kit grille would really work a million times better in my opinion....(or better yet, the entire grille area painted black leaving the chrome surround trim........which would tie in well with the black running boards and roof insert).....and not fight the level of detail that the rest of the build exhibits. But, if you are really fond of that grille decal run with it........it's your model, not mine. Here's an example of what I am explaining with the grille.

I disagree about the grille. When I first saw it, I was like DAMN! that's cool as hell! To me, it makes the model. With that Root Beer paint, I would consider painting the spokes of the wheels a light coat of gold. I saw it on a build here and really liked it. I think it was a Ford shoebox by Flatout.

Killer. I prefer it without decals too, but I guess I'm Vanilla that way The paint detail on the air cleaners is something I wouldn't have thought of! Love the little engine detail decals! I can understand the grille decal from a "show" perspective...but I'd still prefer to see some photo-etch hood pins in the corners to really sell it. I think the gold spokes idea is neat, but I'd have to see a test before I could make a decision...I find it tough to visualize it. I'm glad you re-discovered this model!!

As you probably already figured out I was trying to make the solid grill work to have some more accent color on the car. To be honest, as I'm closing in on having this thing finished I'm second guessing it. I tried out a regular grill tonight and picturing it black washed I'm feeling that's the way to go before it's too late. So, you get to be right! LOL

The older I get, the less I care about that! I just figured I would do for you what you would surely do for me.......(offering up an opinion) IF I were to actually find the time to build again! LOL! I did figure you went with the decal to give some contrasting 'accent' color........just like the firewall. Sometimes less in more though.....likely in this case. I'm still feeling the grille all blacked out (minus the surrounding chrome trim) just like the example I gave with the roadster above.........over a simple black wash between the grille bars if you will. It would definitely fit the 'street rodder' vibe you have going on with the Radir wheels, fancy paint, and what-not. I also think it looks more aggressive then leaving the grille (bars) chrome.

Now, Now, Boyz lets stop this bickering... LoL!
OK when I first saw the "Decal" "Cover" thing I was thinking OH, hes going to run the stock grill bars with this cover over it so it can be displayed either Deuce Grill or Covered Deuce Grill. If that were the case Dr. Fluck has it right, either black wash, contrasting color to the sides of the bars or third you already have some "hood pin" detail on the cover thing. So how about using a hood pin kit and pin the cover at the four corners as already is on the cover. This would look like the covers that you see Hot Rods running when they are taking long distance runs.
I personally do not mind the cover. I like the idea of contrasting color on the sides of the vertical grill bars, I also like the combo of cover and contrasting paint. However, the contrasting paint idea may give it too much of a "Resto Rod" look which may be out of the year range acceptable for TRAK subjects. That would be a matter of opinion for the rest of the group to decide. There's my 2-cents, yer welcome!

I like the cover, but I'm with Skip and Chris on the hoodpins. Photoetch > decals in this instance.

Been thinking about this one after perusing some old musty Hot Rod and Rod and Custom magazines along with some fresh smelling traditional Hot Rod articles in The Rodder's Journal; was looking for other stuff for a "customer project".
I like the idea of the Gold spokes on the Radir Wheels, as long as you can get the gold on so that it isn't translucent. I'm also thinking that the sides of the grill bars would look good in gold, same goes for strength of the gold can't be opaque. Then would need to have black wash with India ink into the spaces between bars. You've already got a gold contrast theme going, this just continues and ties everything together along with the gold "00" on the grill cover.
