For the "Modern Recreations" segment of the "Known Survivors" theme at this year's NNL East I've decided to leave the Southern California-style cars behind for a bit and return to the East Coast-style of mild custom with skirts and continental kit which characterized the customs in the early AMT kits. I realize this style of custom isn't to everyone's taste, including mine these days, but this has turned into a really fun diversion from my usual thing! I hope you get a kick out of it, too! While the '59 Ford kit has a connie kit and long cruiser-style skirts, and the build would've been relatively easy, I opted to go with my "first love" again, and build a '58. First, the chassis was lowered with a slight rearward bias to get the right look. Then I reshaped a '59 Ford skirt to fit and added the stainless molding featured on genuine cruiser skirts. Next, I scratched a bumper extension from laminated sheet styrene. The spare tire is from an AMT '60 Pontiac. A set of five Lancer caps from '60 AMT annual kits give the desired amount of sparkle on the wheels. Now I've got to make extensions for the bumper tips and reshape a skirt for the other side...

I'm not really a connie-kit fan, but I absolutely respect the challenge you've taken on in building one! The skirts fit beautifully so far. I'm very curious to see how you tackle the bumper extensions. I really like how that lancer cap looks, centered in the spare tire cover like crosshairs.

You know I like where this is going. Maybe kinda mild, but it is a 58 Ford afterall. Gary

seeing it reminds me of hanging out at my best friends house back in HS. His father was a huge 57/58 guy and had them everywhere. At one point, they had 6 57 retractables. I was always a 59 ranchero fan. Being from CT, Connie kits were everywhere at shows (even with me being 40 currently), though not so much now a days thankfully haha
Anyways, Ive always dug most mild customs more than radical stuff. Cant wait to see where you take this

The skirts and continental kit are not my favorite items when Customizing something, but especially those skirts look really good on this one! And being your project, I'm sure it'll look fantastic when it's finished anyway. So I'll be following with great interest.

Never really been a big fan of Continental Kits, but you pulled it off nicely and I like the way it looks. This one will finish out nicely once you get some paint on it! Sure will be a lot of tail to drag too!!

Three cheers for bumpers without seams! The Ford is looking great, John. The trim on the greenhouse looks much better having been tightened up somewhat.
