I've been dying to build something during this layoff/quarantine, but my wife keeps assigning me projects that don't remotely involve model building. Soooo.... since the last "survivor spruce-up" AMT '40 coupe I did was so much fun and only took two days to finish, I'm doing another. I've had this dusty old survivor haunting the shelf in the man-cave for years. I got it down the other day and started gently prying it apart; much to my surprise, it was mostly built with Elmer's glue! Almost disassembled itself. So, the plan is to polish up the black plastic while preserving the original decals, add whitewalls, replace the melty wheels and the missing nailhead headers, spruce up the chrome with either replacement parts or Molotow as necessary, and just generally preserve the "flavor" of the original build.

Sounds like a plan!

Nice Randy. Sometimes it amazes me how old these really are. And I was buyin' 'em when they first hit the shelves. Gary

Like this one a lot. It deserves your preservation approach. Keep us updated on it!

I had a few of these back when I was a kid that were given to me. I wish I still had them. One of the coupes looked just like yours. I had a sedan as well.

Nice Randy. Sometimes it amazes me how old these really are. And I was buyin' 'em when they first hit the shelves. Gary I remember the first two '40's I was helped to build, first the '40 deluxe built with my uncle and the '39/'40 Tudor my Dad helped me build. I still remember the engine stands from both that I thought (still do) was really cool because you could display the optional/stock engine with the cars. The first couple built were first issues which I wish I had them back today, if anything just to see how crispy clean the details actually were on those bodies and compare how washed out they really are today. Build on, great to see the resurrection of an old friend, (although I always have disliked the black plastic, before discovering primer). Assume that your restoration will be a refreshenning of the existing first builder's work (assuming its not a glue bomb) and making the old gal presentable in public again! Looks like a fun one to restore, looking forward to seeing her shine again!
