Day 5: Finished the roll bar and braces, painted the drive train and some small parts, unsuccessfully tried to draw the crossed glasses artwork. Big setback: Mixed some two-part filler and, for the first time, didn't use enough catalyst. I thought that I could squeek by so I applied it to about a dozen places on the body and frame since it didn't set up very quickly. It did thicken, though. An hour later it was still gooey so I manually had to scrape it all off and lightly swab the areas with lacquer thinner.
I've been putting off some OT things that I'll have to do tomorrow and there's a big rainstorm coming in late Thursday into Friday that may hamper outdoor painting. We'll see how it goes.

Day 6: Re-did the filler on the body and frame. Painted the body flat black on the inside and flat white primer on the outside. Added a push bar/wheelie skid on the rear of the frame and a headrest for the driver. Painted it metallic blue and started assembling the drive train.

Go Chepp go! It's looking good! Doncha hate that poorly catalyzed putty. I have a project that happened to, and I've yet to dig it out and continue...and it's been 5 years!

Really like the blue you put on the frame! Thanks! It's Dupli-Color Medium Quasar Metallic BGM0438 over Dupli-Color Sandable Gray Hot Rod Primer DAP1692.

Day 7: Fixed some boo-boos on the body and gave it another spray of Tamiya Fine White Primer. Disregard the raggedy stuff around the window openings (it's just paint left over from masking). Discovered that I was missing the second of two scoops and injectors for the blowers but mrmetallic might have a spare that he could send me.
When I started I thought that I could build this in one week. Oh well, it's a good start. I'll keep working on it but at my usual glacier-like pace so this is the last of my daily reports.
Thanks for all the advice, especially Duane whose idea to change my mishmash of parts into an exhibition dragster saved it!

Really good start for only 1 week! I hope you bring this one to the finish line sooner rather than later. 1 month build, maybe?

Very Impressive for a weeks worth of work, lots accomplished and lots fleshed out on what the final product is going to look like! I'm with Dennis, I like that blue on the frame too. This project reminds me of a much later wheel stander pick up that ran under the Knott's Berry Farm sponsorship can't remember who "drove" it. (? At least it had the Knott's Berry Farm name on the side, sponsored or not.)

Charley, here's another name you could use, for your '34; " Tire Fryer" !

Now that I've got all the time in the world, I've been busy monkeying with it. Frame: added braces to the front; separated the drag link from just being glued to the frame rail and fabbed stuff to locate the Revell 22 Jr. steering gear; added a bracket for the accelerator pedal; smoothed the frame and improved the push bar/skid. Engine: worked on cutting down the pyramid intake manifold and adapting it to the modified Revell '32 Ford Hemi intake manifold. The tricky thing here is to keep the two blower drives and the crank with exactly the same locations so the drive belt from the AMT '53 Stude Hemi will fit.
Here's a backstory, subject to change: around 1962 drag guys were sitting around drinking and came up with the wheelstander idea. Somebody had the pickup cab (rusted around the bottom) and chassis. At the time it wasn't worth fixing up since it wasn't a roadster or a coupe, so doing a poorman's section (cutting off the lower body) and welding the doors, etc. on was a cheap and effective use. The pyramid blower drive didn't work well enough for class drag racing but it looked impressive. Track promoters were looking for things to fill down time during meets so the guys figured that combining the stuff could bring in enough money to make it worthwhile.

I like the backstory! "Well...it won't be competitive, but dang does it look cool!" That's the spirit! It will just be something the guys cooked up in the shop with what they had on hand.
I re-sprayed the chassis in a slightly different color. I'm working on using up my meager stock of enamel bottle paint by thinning it with cheap lacquer thinner and airbrushing it on. This is a mix of mostly Model Master metallic blue with some MM Arctic Blue metallic. It's not as pretty as the Dupli-Color spray bomb that I used on the first go-round but it's good enough.
Adapting the pyramid intake manifold and blowers from the AMT '53 Stude kit to the Hemi in the Revell '32 Ford has been a fiddly time-waster. I would have been much better off buying another Stude just for the engine so I could throw it together quickly.

Mission creep has set in. I'll add a driver figure, probably with white pants and shirt. The open-face helmet might be pearl white. The rear will get an enclosed faux pickup box with a louvered top panel. It will "contain" all the stuff I don't want to spend time building/detailing such as a battery, fuel tank, hydraulic mechanisms for the shifter and clutch, etc.
