Hi guys! I've noticed that when people post sectioned rods or kustoms here, there's usually at least one request for a tutorial. This won't be an exhaustive step-by-step, just a general how-to. So, let's go! I decided to section a '53 Ford pickup for the '50s truck community build project, so I started by laying out the cut lines using Tamiya 1/8" masking tape. This will give us a 3" scale section job. Also, it works best if you choose a place on the body where the sides are fairly vertical; everything goes back together with less work. I removed the hood (that'll get sectioned later), and proceeded to cut all the way around the cab on the upper cut line, then lifted off the top part of the cab. After that, I cut all the way around on the bottom cut line, going slowly and being careful to follow the tape line closely. Precision here will make rejoining the two pieces later much easier. I glued the two halves back together with super glue, tacking them in a few spots for alignment just like you would do when welding on a 1:1, then ran a bead of glue around the seam on the inside of the cab. After a little sanding to true up the joint, here's what it looks like. Here's a little comparison shot showing basically a before and after. Stay tuned for sectioning the hood and more, later! Randy

Excellent. This is another good example of a "simple" modification that just doesn't have to be that hard. Some folks make it that way. Great job. Clean cuts, takin' yer' time, PLANNING, well executed job.

thank you Randy. that was very easy to follow. you have me wondering now, how and where would you sectio a '49 Ford but leave the original wheelwells? i can do this and i was told to section it from the flattest part of the side of the car. i can't get a ruler completely next to the car with out sanding the trimline offwhich will come off anyway. the rear wheelwells won't be touched by the section if it were to be a straight cutbut, it would take half of the front wheelwell. should i cut it in a "Z" thanks, Duane thanks, Duane

Nice one, Randy! It looks so good, the factory cab looks too tall in comparison. Duane, You can take a section out between the wheels, then "C" up over the wheels and back down to the areas under the head and taillights. Or, nobody says you can't cut right through the wheelwells and make them shorter too. It's up to you.

Thanks for the how-to randy.
hey guys, wait until he shows you how to cheat-section. It's so easy you will slap your head and say "why didn't I think of that?!?"

Great tutorial... now for the hard question... How do you section a 32 3w and keep the detail behind the rear wheel well along with lining up the trunk/bottm lip panel?

How do you section a 32 3w and keep the detail behind the rear wheel well along with lining up the trunk/bottm lip panel? Hey Steve- I think Rod and Custom did an article on sectioning a '32 roadster, keeping the detail you mentioned. Can't remember which issue it was though- maybe a year or two ago?
