this was built in a contest that a club member Chuck Bell put up his own money for. the prizes were worth building for, but not many entered because of the rules.
we were to only use items found around the house , no after market! i watched a documentary on History channel at the time i was building this and watched black and white film of young guys back in the 1950's racing around on dirt roads. they explained and it was evident that they removed fenders and anything they could to make the car lighter to go faster, including headlights.
i even saw a couple cars that had no rad support so the rad was leaning back. some guys took their windsheilds off to be more aerodynamic.
this may only have been popular to do for a short time, but that is how i based my build.
i weathered with my wife's eye shadows SHHHHHH..... (laughing)
i wired with thread and built the car with nothing more that would have been available in the early 1960's around the house.
the kit supplied disc brakes and shocks....hey it's a model, i used what was there ;D
this is what gets most people.....* i used my own ear wax to make the eye shadow stick on the seats and look grungy*
the flathead is from the '49 merc kit and so are the wheels.
this is what they looked like on tv......no headlights, no windsheilds or fenders.... although this is not a scene, i wanted to show that they did race like this. the scene i watched was teenagers smiling as they went by the camera and racing side by side and following each other around corners etc.... the narrator explained that when they were all done for the day, they would hurry up and put the headlights back on and windsheilds in order to avoid traffic problems lol
