Dealing with this one. Having some design issues on the rear end. Can not deside on how i want the rear door to look. It such a big empty space that needs something to fill or break the lines. I got three thougts on the look 1. A horizontal split, foling up and down with chrome trim, licence plate and a door handle/plate light above. 2. A verical split in half with a handle in center and maby a licence plate 3. A big door open sideways with spare tire.

What if you were to take the rear of the body panel (on the side of the car where it goes downward)...and make a "reverse" of that (from the upper center of the door and down toward the side of the car? (Did that maker ANY sense? lol) It would be sorta like the side of the car...only shorter, and straighter across before heading downward. It would mirror the side trim is what I'm trying to say I think. Just a thought

I think the cleanest solution is probably the vertical split with 2 doors. If you're going to do the tailgate/liftgate thing (horizontal split) I'd suggest moving the seam lower, below the window moldings, maybe almost halfway down, so that the two parts are of realistic size (imagine trying to load anything into a car with a 4-foot deep tailgate!)
It's looking great so far!

Those taillights and the rear of the rear fender shape look cool. I can't think of any better way to do it. That makes the overall styling really slick.

Those taillights suit the car well! The fender extensions change the feel of the car from being very rounded and tail-heavy to long-'n-low.

The Mercury tail lights are perfect for the look. The only thing that seems to massive is the split rear doors. The window shapes seem to contradict the large openings for all the other glass. Just my opinion though. Paul

Just my opinion though. Paul I have big trouble with the MASSIVE rear doors. Don’t know how to make them look better. I have thougt about it a lot now and can’t find a way to get it right.

Marcus, could you add a belt line even with the top of the fenders that pushed the bottom of the doors out some. Much like you did with the extensions on the rear fenders. Splitting the doors vertical might make it look smaller.

I liked the mods shown in your May 17 post but I like the mods shown today even better. The one-piece rear window adds to the '50s look and keeps the low/wide theme going. The outward bulge of the tailgate nicely continues the rounded shapes elsewhere. You've got a good eye.

Looks like the tailgate shape has been perfected. And here I was thinking, just trying to figure a way you can hide the flatness and put the spare tire back on. Not now! Gary
