This is from the switch era in the late 50's when Dry Lake racers started to got go the drag race route. Made the buggy spring rear set up using extra parts from the Atlantic Fiat kit along withe the quick change and axle tubes. The rear spring /shock mounts are from the Tweedy Pie kit and the ends of the Revell 9 inch are grafted on. Front axle is the Revell 32 axle with the spring from the Fiat kit grafted on. Front shocks and mounts are from the Fiat also. Body is channeled 8mm and top is chopped 6mm. Mocked up the engine set back and roughed out the mounts. The mounts will need lightening holes and a small flange added. The engine is a resin 1957 Olds 371 c.i. based on the Caddy engine pack. I cast up a few engines years ago. Still have a few more body mods left to do.

Nice Chop there Paul, the first picture with gap in the middle looks like a real chop without bracing, you really strive for accurate there! LoL! Like how you have made everything fit like metalwork, can't wait to see some primer on it to really get a good look at it! Build On!

Got the body pretty close to the way I want it and after hours, the hood and grill shell is done. There is a small Moon tank that mounts in front of the grill that holds iced water to keep the engine cooled a bit. The tank mount and piping is the next project. Funny, the water tank is in the front and the fuel tank in next to the driver, I assume for the hand pressure pump. Looking through my old Auto paint chip books to find the formula to mix a close match to the "Baby Poop Brown" color, it appears to be a REO truck color. Hosted on FotkiHosted on FotkiHosted on Fotki

Excellent work Paul. Quite a surprise to see the bottom of the grille shell cut off. Your inspiration car wasn't exactly elegant. Love it. Just the things you need to go fast and not a bit more.

The info I've gotten was the car was primarily, aside from the nicely finished top chop built with a torch, stick welder and hammers. Seems anything that required a degree of finesse was avoided.

Love the description of the quality of the metal work on the original. I remember seeing a few cars that fit that description at the drags when I was a kid, they were crude but cool. Even more so, "Lord help ya if anything bad happened at speed!". As squirrely as some of those early cars were and the build quality of a lot of them, it's a wonder that any of their drivers survived at all! I've seen structural type welds done with stick welders that were merely surface penetration with a spattery bead holding a roll bar to the frame, the welded members welded not much better. Then again, what do you expect from a $9.98 Western Auto Welder! That Mailbox rear window slit is just a trip into Koolsville and then some! Love it!
