Super clean bodywork, John - It's great to see a classic kit brought back to it's former glory with such care and attention to detail ;D

I'm willing to bet those blue parts are grafts from the Revell Ranchero... nice to see this bastard kit being put to good use. Years ago, I started converting one of the chopped ones to a SD... still determined to finish it now that my skills are better... some day!

I love 58 Fords (have one as my daily driver) and I am going to have to break down and buy one of these kits. Can't wait to see the progress on this one.

Years ago, I started converting one of the chopped ones to a SD... still determined to finish it now that my skills are better... some day! Sorry, John, you'd lose that bet! The blue bits are grafted in from a late '70s issue of the AMT '57 Fairlane 500! Don't look for much progress on this one till the '59 T-bird's done, guys. Just thought you'd want to see the top in place! Kevin, glad to hear your driving a '58 everyday! Having had two myself and I can say what nice cars they are, but here in PA most (including mine) suffered premature rust-out. Would love to see pix of yours! At the time I built this Club Vic in Sun Gold and Raven Black I had a 1/1 in my driveway in that combo. LOTS of nitpicky little corrections to the kit courtesy of having a real one for reference...

John, there's a pict of my 58 over in the 1:1 board. It's not too good, but when the weather breaks I will take one with my new camera.

While casting about for a project to work on after finishing the '59 T-bird I've been cleaning up bumpers for plating, including the ones for this '58 ragtop. I wanted a custom grill so part of the prep process was to ream out the stock grill and cleanup the opening to fit the first choice, a "drawer pull" style grill from an early '60s Aurora parts pack. Each grill is simply a rectangle that needs to be shaped to fit a given opening. Also included are some Chevy and Corvette style teeth, some pointed bullets, and two strips of trim... The bumper I'm using actually came from a trashed PMC '58 Ford wagon friction model and is molded in thick black styrene. After cutting off the bracket, it took quite a bit of grinding to remove the grill and crossbars, then more grinding with the Dremel and scraping with a #11 to carve out a channel for the new grill to fit into. I then made a pattern by tracing shape of the opening onto paper. After cutting it out and fine tuning it a bit, I used the paper pattern to make another out of sheet plastic onto which I marked a center line and horizontal reference line. This'll come in handy should I decide I don't like the new grill. Before transferring the outline of the pattern to the back of the new grill, I roughly cut the grill to size so I could determine where I wanted the round projections, or "drawer pulls" to fit in the opening... Here's the new grill and bumper taped on for a mockup. Looking forward to seeing what it'll look with a newly plated bumper!... Lowered for this mockup, I'm kinda thinking this close to the final stance!...

Beautiful work John - The modified grille is a vast improvement over the looks of the original piece!
I can't help but wonder if the Lucas headlight bezels from AMT's '62 Corvette will fit those headlight buckets...
