But it is a concept, Disregarding that fact would be like disregarding the fact that a volksrod is made from a Volkswagen.

I think there's a difference there.
I don't see any problem with a VW body in itself.
But I also see it this way...
Chrysler Turbine car, customized in a 60s style = yes.
Fenderless Chrysler Turbine car with suicide front end, body made into a roadster with Du Vall windshield, bomber seats and old Ford wire wheels = nah.
It IS harder with some vehicles, but I DO believe that almost everything could be made TRAKable that is from the right time period, even a VW. But one has to look at, how would this car have been altered during "our" time period?
There probably was souped up and/or customized VWs on both street and strip during the time period this forum will represent, but I have a hard time believing that very many of them were made into what we today call a "Volksrod".
Sure, the modifications probably in most cases were possible by then - but the same goes for say a 66 Nova, but probably it would never have been considered. And, should I apply the "Volksrod" concept on a 66 Nova, it would definitely not be traditional anywhere in my eyes.
Or, how about a 57 Chevy, with gasser stance, model T wooden wheels, Corvair Turbo engine mounted up front, Citroen single spoke steering wheel, painted cocoa brown with pink roof? It could have been done too....but is that a "traditional" build?
Just my few cents. The boss may think different so don't listen to me, it's just an opinion and not some kind of rules.
