I've been wanting to build this for years; finally got off my butt and started it. This is the custom El Camino box art from one of the early issues of the AMT '55 Nomad. There were several versions of the art; this one is my favorite 'cuz it's clean and simple. So, my build started off by grafting on the kit-supplied custom roof, after shaving off all of the ribs and junk, and slightly widening it to fit better. I really don't like the rear window of the kit piece, so I grafted in a slightly narrowed '65 El Camino rear window, and the '65 El Camino bed. I also shaved off the Nomad tailgate ribs. With upgrades done to the back half, I'm going to try to stay as true to the box art as I can. And BTW, the wheels and tires are for mockup only, I plan to use some vintage AMT pinner whites with the 5-spoke mags from the new-tool '60 Starliner kit.

Love it so far! I like how you smoothed the ribs off the roof and tailgate...it cleans the car up and makes it more consistent with the smoothness of the custom grille insert that comes with the Nomad kit. I don't hate the Pegasus wheels and tires, but it will definitely look better with the taller AMT pinner tires.
The Nomad kit has bumpers with separate overriders/guards, right? That's a really handy feature for building customs.

An idea for the rims; the recently reissued 65 Riviera kit has the classic Astros as it alway has, & in addition to the new triple WW tires, a set of tires with wide whites on one side, & pinners on the other. The pinners & Astros would look sharp on this!
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
This looks really good already! Glad to see one of these being built, because I've been playing around with the idea of building something similar out of one pretty much trashed '55 Nomad glue bomb that I have. Maybe some day, but meanwhile I'll be watching your progress closely.
