sumthin i just remembered guys !!! a show that i saw on the History Channel had a program about shine runners. the narrator(several actual good ol' boys)were saying that for its time, the '40 Ford Coupe was the 'Pick' of the Shiners. they said that was due to the ease of modifications to the engines and running gear and suspension and weight distribution of the car.
they also said that one ol' boy, who had a '31 Ford 2dr sedan, would have a bucket of water stashed in the weeds just outside of town. they said he would stop before he got to his home in town and wash the car with the hidden bucket of water with soap so the cops wouldn't know what he'd done. they also said that the Shiners would keep the cars in the best possible looking(the reason being, because some of the back road was where the Feds would wait and the Shiners didn't want the Feds to hear them coming)and running order because they depended on the car for their livelyhood and to outrun the Feds.
