heres a few of the '40 coupe i'm working on. i really liked the flame decals on the box art of the Goodguys street rod release, so i'm building that one and will use the decals that it came with. the engine choice is still up in the air a bit, but more than likely will be a flathead. the style will be the late 50's, early 60's. i got the front really low, as low as you can go with a solid axle and the stock frame at least. it should end up with a really nice rake to it. forgot to mention the firewall! i'm going with the early stock car style with the battery in that hole cut in, like the '37 Truck kits. i filled the hood hinge holes and cut in the battery tray/hole. took 9 little pieces of sheet plastic to fill all the holes, but i'm happy with the results so far. How's yer tire/fender clearance, going that low?
I went extreme with an earlier AMT 40 and had to hog out the inside of the fenders almost to the point of breaking thru. I ain't too big on cutting off the tops of tires, even tho it won't show.

Your work on the firewall looks great. However, I'm kinda lazy and was wondering, didn't Rep+Min offer a "de-holed" version of this firewall? If so, is it still available?

tire clearance should be just fine still, i didn't go as low as i wanted to, the solid axle limits how far down the front can go. with independent i'm sure i could get it lower and then have some tire clearance issues. i flipped the front spring to curve up instead of down. i ultimately had to notch the frame for the axle, spring and the wishbones! just small notches for realism.
i wish RMcoMd did offer the firewall already filled, i hate the hood hinge holes in this kit! they do offer two very nice stock firewalls for the '32 kit though. Dave

Dave I've used the R+M deuce firewalls, and I agree, very nice. I know they offered the 40 firewall at one point, but it may have only been available as part of one of their 40 ford custom bodies? I think it was mastered by our own Lyle Willits, so maybe he can shed some light on it?

The smooth firewall comes in the Reps & Mins '40 Ford Duvall Roadster resin kit. This was all mastered by Rik Hoving. I never mastered a smooth firewall for a '40 Ford, but I DO fill the big square holes with sheet plastic on all the ones I've built. I can't speak for Norm, but I'll bet if you call him and tell him what you want, he'll run off a firewall or two for you.

I knew you filled the holes in yours lyle, but for some reason i thought Norm casted and sold some from your master. I love Rik's work, but I like the look of the stock firewall for most of my builds.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Dave, I like how clean and crisp that chassis is. The only other way that you could get any lower with the stock-style front end, (IMO) would be if you spilt your radiuls rods and moved them to the framerail. This would only buy you about 1 inch in scale with your current axle. This WOULD allow more travel, but the downside of that would be that your frameside would/could look cobbled by the step-notch to allow for axle movement at the front crossmember. Is it worth that to you? ANOTHER way would be to Z it a little in the front. Not sure how low you wanna go. This setup looks great, and realistic. My .02 worth, but what you have looks great!

OH! I also wanna thank you fellas for pointing out something that I have overlooked for YEARS. I always left the firewalls as they came in the kit, "holey". Now I got ANOTHER trick to put in my bag!

Great project Dave! I'm just digging in on my 40 ford standard kit..you've given me some good ideas on lowering it..mine will have an I-6 OHC Pontiac mill for motorvation probably..
Good luck on your build, I look forward to seeing more.
