Instead of posting in the "No love for the 40 Ford" thread all the time, this thread will be the home of this build. This week I tried to cant the trailing edge of the front fenders inward, screwed up, and had to remove the rear section, move it back to fill the gap left from the pie-sectioning, and add a filler piece in the crown of the wheel arch. This makes the wheel opening oblong. At first this bothered me, but I think it might stay that way... The bottom of the front fenders has been rolled under using the front of a spare '40 hood. I'm currently experimenting with ideas for the side cove, and contemplating extending the rear fenders/re-doing the rolled pan.

Glad you finally gave this thing its own thread, Chris! Such ambitious styling...I love it!

Pure awesomeness!
I would strongly recommend using Miliput Superfine White putty for blending in the contours. Not only is it strong enough to reinforce and support the assemblies (just remember to scuff up and clean the surfaces before applying it), it's also very easy to sculpt, and since it's a 2-part epoxy putty, it won't sink once it has set up properly (within 24 hours at regular room temperature).

Thanks guys! This build is kind of insanely ambitious, but I'm having fun and have fingers crossed that I'll get it done eventually! Christian: thanks for the tip, I have some milliput standing by. I've never used it on a car body before, but it should work well. I'm going to try to get the mods 90% of the way there with plastic and then use lots of putty.

I've never liked radically customized cars like this but I can certainly appreciate the talent needed and the amount of work involved to build one. It's honestly overwhelming to look at but I'm really interested in seeing how it all shapes up.

I really, really love this kind of El Matador/Crusader/Bob Crespo/Dave Cunningham 60s-style 40 Ford. My workbench has a whole fleet of them in various states of dismemberment and reconstruction.
I think you're on the right track, but keep thinking about that side cove. I'm not sure it's quite there yet. It might also be worthwhile to shorten the distance between the leading edge of the hood/grille and the front wheel opening.

It might also be worthwhile to shorten the distance between the leading edge of the hood/grille and the front wheel opening. Thanks for the good feedback. This is exactly the reason I have not pulled the trigger on some of those mods. It needs some more thought! For instance, I thought I was extending the nose similar to El Matador, but that car is actually fairly flat across the front, resulting in a shorter distance from the wheelarch to the leading edge of the headlight pods than on my build. Something will have to be moved to make up the difference, so it doesn't end looking like a bumper-car with massive overhangs. Man, El Matador is so brilliant. Darn close to perfect. On that note, I'd love to see some shots of these chopped up Crusader/El Matador style builds you speak of!

I think the only thing that would have made the El Matador even better looking is if those stupid coves weren't cut into all four fenders. They really do take away from the rest of the styling and overall flow of the car. If you could photoshop those coves out of the back of the front and rear fenders I'm sure you'd agree! LOL!
