So i'm thinking of dumping an AMT '58 Edsel down in the weeds so it's dragging that big old continental kit along in the dirt behind it. Would it be TRaKable with that amount of real estate out back? I can't recall seeing a kitted build on here. Not bothered either way but if the answer's no i'll cut loose with the weird stick and the skulls and flames.

Sure. Why not? If it's good enough for this '58 Ford (vintage photo from Andy Southard's "Custom Cars of '50s") it's good for an Edsel. Needs skirts to complete the effect though! This treatment was bigger in the East and Midwest. Attachment Deleted

I can't imagine why anyone would think it's anything but quintessentially late 50's - nothing evokes the style of the era more completely than an Edsel, and no accessory is more evocative of the period than a Continental kit. And I agree with John about the skirts - why hold back...?

I agree with the others. Should be good assuming the rest of the build elements are "in spec"

Continental kits were a hot item in the 50s. My dad's Hudson Jet had one, and his dad's Hudson had one, too!

Thanks for the encouragement guys. The AMT Edsel with the continental kit has skirts but I may see what else I can come up with as they are fairly subtle. I have some ideas and will rough something out and throw it up here or the primer thread to see what you all think. Having read the HAMB thread i'm surprised not to see "I HATE CONTINENTAL KITS". Obviously more tolerance of different cultures here...

Just to put in another 2 cents' worth, we may forget at times that this is a modeling forum. Some annual kits from earlier eras may contain "odd" customizing parts, but these are a reflection of real car trends and styles at the time the kit was released. Just like in the real car world, taste is in the eye of the beholder, but there is historical significance none the less. Lord, how I wish I could revisit some of the auto parts stores of my youth to purchase some of the accessories I laughed at back then!

I remember many of the AMT and Jo-Han kits coming with huge bubble skirts and continental kits back in the late 50s. I'm sure I built a few glue bombs using them but I honestly can't remember. All I know is when we moved from the Washington D.C. area to Southern California in 1959 my idea of what a "cool" car was changed dramatically. I never built another tail dragger or used a continental kit again.

Just please don't ever put one on a four door sedan. One of my pet hates.

The red one just gets away with it being pillarless, the wagon looks FUGLY.
There's a trend in the UK for putting Continenetal kits onto fullsize 70s sedans, so you'll see somthing inappropriate like a '73 Electra four door with a three foot long shelf extending out from the back and the bumper nailed on to it. Hideous.

Hideous. I actually prefer the wagon. At least it doesn't have a 3 foot bumper extension. I'd like to see a side or 3/4 view of it.

Reminds me of something related I read the other day, apparently Ford had a number of compliants that the Edsel wagon tailights were misleading at night since, when lit in the dark, the arrows pointed the opposite way to the direction of the turn the car was doing...
