Good info Dennis, thanks! So..nothing much flashy going on with this project, but after being absent for a few weeks I'm back at the bench sorting this thing out. So far: -trimmed a '34 Lindberg PU custom bar grille to fit a '32 Lindberg grille shell (the '32 insert is ill fitting and looks pretty lame, but the shape of the shell is ok) -built a plate for the carbs to sit on. The carbs don't appear to have the bases included, so this helps -shaved down the intake and mounted the blower. It will have a cast finish -belt from the parts box, and an alternator because a generator would hit the valve cover in that location. -drilled distributor from a Revell '32 and drilled the block for the new, angled rear location. -added a thermostat housing/rad hose attachment point to the front of the intake -dipstick, oil filter, oil filler, alternator bracket scratchbuilt -carved the molded-in oil filter to look a little more like the Y-block's fuel pump -mufflers from the '34 kit, with solder exhaust pipes running through holes drilled in the kit frame. Had to remove the battery box and patch the floor to make that happen. Basically just taking it from glorified mockup to something a bit more solid....still need to sort the steering, attach the cycle fenders properly (currently they're just propped up, and their position is pretty awkward, needs tweaking), make a coil, find some dual master cylinders for the firewall, etc etc. Oh, and headlights/taillights. I have not decided on wheels/tires, but now it has some Modelhaus tires on the back and 55 Chevy hub caps. I also have '58 Edsel, '57 Chrysler, and '53 Stude caps. The stude caps look sweet, but I might want to save them for a different build....decisions decisions.

Gotta say, those '55 Chevy caps look damn good on there. I'd roll with 'em! The bigger rear tires also make the whole car look better. Nice job getting lots of little details sorted out. The blown Y Block is gonna be super bitchin'. Any idea what kit that belt/pulley arrangement is from? PS: This makes me want to do a new version of the Deuce shelled and channeled '34 Coupe I did years ago. It could use some fenders like yours. Hosted on Fotki

That's a great build Dennis. 36 headlights? And the hood vents look '36 too. Ala Kart wheels/tires, and from the looks of it, suspension too. It's cool to see how unobtrusive the air bag towers are when they're painted a dark color.
The blower belt on my build...I think it might come from the "Boyd edition" '32 Ford (ex MPC switchers with the huge wheels). I thought a multiple-v-belt setup would be more accurate, but I'm way too lazy to deal with something that fiddly right now, haha.

I've been poking at this one here and there over the last couple months, cleaning up the bodywork and trying to figure out taillights and headlights. Today I bent up a nerf bar for the rear. For taillights, I have at least 3 different types of teardrop...these ones are roof lights from the AMT '53 F-100, and they're ribbed like the Lincoln valve covers, which is cool. I'm not really sold on them, though. Tried canting them, but that gave the rear a cheesy "cats-eye" look. I actually kinda like a Model A light (or some other round light) perched mid-fender. It's a bit of a cluttered look, but it might actually suit the car. The next option is to mount the taillights in the nerf bar, but I might be running the exhaust tips through the middle of the nerf, depending on the mounting height. Hmm.

If you prefer a round set of taillights, and want something out of the ordinary, you could try a pair of '41 Willys taillights.
Another interesting choice could be the stock taillight assemblies (including the fairings) from Revell's '48 Ford Custom Coupé.
By the way, have you considered re-arching and narrowing the front fenders to reduce the radius and tuck them closer to the front tires?

Hey thanks guys. Chris--the fenders need some love. I'll probably try to make them fit tighter to the tires somehow. Thanks for the taillight recommendations. I don't think I have any of those though! I do have: 48 ford, Ala Kart bullets, 32 Ford, 34 Ford, 40 Ford hashmarks (could look pretty good maybe), revell '29 teardrops, AMT '34 teardrops (39 ford style), '57 corvette bullets, 59 Cadillac bullets, 62 Impala...the list goes on. I'm sure I'll find something. Craig--the nerf bar is a bit of an experiment. The process: -wire is a ski ticket holder. Pilfered a bunch of these from the local ski hill over the years. -one corner of the wire holder already had a bend in it, so I measured the desired width and tried to make a matching bend on the other side by wrapping the wire around a needle-file handle. Tricky to get the bend to match. Left one side long, to be trimmed later. -found the unit was too wide, but realized I needed a license plate bump, so measured center, width of plate, and eyeballed the angle to bend the wire up to clear the license plate. Matched those bends on the other side -adding the bump for the license plate narrowed the nerf bar overall. -trimmed the bottom wire to close everything up -torqued the nerf bar with a pair of smooth pliers until it lay flat, as the various bends were not quite on the same plane, resulting in some twist/curve across the piece. -cut some short sections to span the middle, held them in some hobby pliers and fish-mouthed the ends with a round needle file. At this point I'm not sure how to mount it to the car, so that's the next step in the puzzle. It needs to be strong....but not too bulky. Ski ticket wire holder:

This is going to be cool looking hot rod Chris! I don't know how I missed it! I think you had the right idea with the '37 grille. The '32 grille may work if it was laid back maybe. Those cab lights look pretty cool once you get them painted. That's what I'm using on my '53 F-100.

Thanks for the comments and ideas guys! Whew, it's been a while...dragged this one out of the box the other day to see if I could push it a couple feet further down the field. ...made some hairpins using the same ski-pass wire as the rear nerf bar, and mocked up some AMT '25T headlights. Also trying to figure out how to get some tube shocks into the mix. I'm not sure it's kosher to mount shocks to those aluminum headlight stands...hmm. *off to find reference photos* I think these headlights are just the right flavor of awkward. Wouldn't really want them on a 1:1 rod, but they have the 'look'. I might install indicator lights on the little nubs sticking out the sides of the headlight stands.
