It's an idea inspired by this custom model built in 1963, that was a cross between a 1963 Corvette & a Jag XKE, the Sty Ray, so it fits our time frame here: Len Woodruff built a clone of this long gone model for the International Model Car Builders' Museum, & did an article for SA back in 2015 showing how he built the clone: It's styling changes & overall design interests me, but there's a lot of the model that doesn't work for me. Still, enough does work that I've started on my own custom Corvette, inspired by this one. I'm using the optional custom roof from the 289 Cobra kit, modified to eliminate the step & the faux vinyl top in front. Here's a taped together first look at where I'm at. Please ignore the styrene rod you see there. I sawed the front part of the roof from the back part, raised the front part up, (again, eliminating that annoying step), & the styrene rod is both to bridge the gap, & to add strength, as it's all welded together with liquid cement. There's a rod glued to the underside as well, & both will be sanded flush with the roof parts, & puttied over to eliminate the transition: Trust me, I already have a plan in mind to fix the too short rear deck! I'm not using the XKE chassis or running gear, & because of that I won't be shortening the wheelbase, but a lot of the things Len had to do to replicate that model inspired some ideas I have. So, is it as trakable as I think it is?

I think it looks TRAKable, if only for the originals time frame alone. The cross of the Corvette and XKE gives it continental flair which is pulled off well in this case. I remember reading the article, makes me want to find that issue again, that's what I like about that magazine it has such a broad level of interest and interesting models built in it. It was things like this article that made me cancel my subscription for another model magazine with a board and resubscribe to SAE,,,, or was it because they quit sending out issues of the magazine.... ( I find I read and reread issues of SAE versus cherry pick the articles of interest and skip the others that don't.). Sorry didn't mean to hijack your fine build with whining about magazines!

Yep, that's TRAKable. I'm building a radical 'vette custom for the Autorama, and most of the ideas it incorporates are borrowed from either period model cars (like the Sty Ray, hadn't seen it before, so thanks!) or 1:1 show cars like the Asteroid, Cosma Ray, etc. Can't wait to see where you go with this!

Oh, yeah! To me, that's TRAK-able. That '63-'64 Riviera grille looks good there -- I wonder why I haven't seen that used on other '63-'67 Corvettes.
