Thanks to Ed Fluck for the bodies and other parts, and to scalespeedshop (Ron Heine) for the much needed front suspension parts, I have another project in the works on my bench. I've always liked the 56-57 Vettes, and liked them as customs too so how could I not want to build one. Starting with an MPC drag body the first thing I did was to fill in the rear fender openings so I can reshape them back to stock. I had a couple of the open grille shells so I stripped the chrome from them and added them to the grille opening, one in front of the other. I used strips of styrene to build up a new shape around the now protruding opening. The door handle holes are filled and the chrome trim has been removed from the side coves. An extra pair of headlights are added below the stock openings. I've got lots more to do and more pictures to come. Please stay tuned. Thanks, Gary Hosted on FotkiHosted on FotkiHosted on Fotki

Yes! I'm stocked. Diggin' the concave bar grille. We don't see many custom corvettes on TRAK, so this will be a treat!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't wait to see how this project evolves.
The recessed Mercury grille looks great!
Just out of curiousity: Have you considered a '53 Buick-like headlight layout?

Chris, some things grow from what I have on hand. I have 2 pairs of stock headlights from this kit, and I kind of think this setup will work. That plus the fact that I don't have any of those Buick units. I appreciate your suggestion however, thanks. Anybody like the 59 Chevy grille?
I'll be back later today with more pictures. Please check back later.

So, you guys know that the 55-57 T-Birds had pretty much the same taillights as their bigger cousins right! So why not have full size 56 Chevy taillights on a 56 Vette. I said to myself, why the heck not?! I'm still roughing in all the rear fender mod's but I wanted to show you what it would look like. The penciled in rear fender cove is a possibility, or maybe not. I'm still thinking on that. Gary Hosted on FotkiHosted on Fotki

The Chevy insert is cool, but I feel like the Mercury grill suits the opening beautifully, seems natural in the grille aperture. *edit* whoa, missed the last update. Love those Chevy taillights!! The rear coves make the sides of the car a bit busy, but in 60s custom-land busy means better, haha! I like 'em. They would help take some visual weight out of the bulked-up rear fenders, and keep the car looking speedy.

I actually like the '59 (?) grille insert a bit more, but the Merc grille looks more custom. The fins and tail lights are brilliant, and not only would the side coves take some visual weight out of the rear fenders but they would also put a little more corvette flair back in 'em since, inevitably, there's a lot of the full-size in there now.

Oh yeah I’m liking this. I really like the tail lights and headlights, and I like the ‘59 grille.

The taillights are freakin' awesome!
I like the concave grill WAY more. Much more custom looking.
Not sure how I feel about the rear coves. I guess I'd have to see them executed.

This is really cool project! Haven't seen many Corvettes being built as a Custom, but these things definitely have a great potential for a tasty Custom. Both of the grilles look really good in my opinion, but if I had to choice, I'd probably go with the Mercury unit. The tail fins are a great idea as well. Going to be a very cool Corvette, keep it up.

A lot of filling and sanding later, I've reached the point of the first primer I think. Hosted on FotkiHosted on FotkiI'm still thinking about the rear fender coves. Gary
