Longtime KKIM member Gene Baldauf passed away a couple years ago, and since then his family has been selling off some of his 1:1 hot rod and scale model collections. His son Scott, also a longtime KKIM member had some of his dads items for sale at our meet back in October. He had some really cool stuff that he was letting go, but a couple old Monogram builtups really caught my eye because as most of you know I've really been digging those early Monogram hot rod kits lately. I purchased the Lil Deuce he had for parts, but this cool old Woody was too cool to part out. The more i looked at it I could tell it had been set up for racing with bucket seats and console, a 409, and a chute tucked up under the rear of the body. I pledged to Scott that I would preserve his dads vision and took it home.
Here's what I started with. Grille and headlights missing. No wheels or tires. And a badly warped roof. but the soul was still there. I worked to remove the sad roof panels, and then she sat on the bench for a few months because I haven't had much bench time lately (you'll see why soon when I share pics in the "workspace" thread)
Once I was able to get back to the bench I decided to knock this one out because it shouldn't require a whole lot of work. About 3 years ago, right before my father-in-law passed he bestowed to me what was left of his small childhood model collection. In the box were a few builtups in various states of disrepair, and a bunch of parts in the bottom of the box. I sorted through the builds and set them aside for future projects, and left the parts in a bin for sorting. I haven't been through those parts yet, so I decided to go through and see if I could find anything for this project in there. Jackpot! Not sure what they came from, but they looked era correct and gently aged, so after drilling out the backs to mount they fit right on the Mono axles. I did add a .100x .100 strip of Evergreen to the front crossmember to raise the front a bit, dug a grill shell out of the parts box and a new roof assembly. I also snagged a couple "wood" panels for the rear to provide a spot for some class designator decals. I think Gene would be pretty happy with how she came back. I know Scott is.
