I started a bunch of builds, some I set aside before I retired. Now retired I'm going over the list, revisiting several. This one is familiar to movie fans, and who doesn't like a good tuck and roll, which is where I started before needing to make a final decision on the engine: Did it REALLY have six strombergs?

Did it REALLY have six strombergs? Well.... In the world of Lucas, it did. However, the hood was never really opened far enough or at the right angle in the movie to dispel the naysayers. If it Did, that little 348 would be a wheezer.... Even IF you were running 40 weight Castrol-R. Tom

I did a bit of research on the subject. The old article I read last night tells the story of how a young Mike Famalette in Vallejo CA needed a car his senior year in '72, saw an add in the San Francisco Chronicle for a used '58 Impapla for $325. It was a used car from a movie he had not seen. When he got to the storage lot, there was also a 51 Merc $975, a '32 deuce and 55 Chevy for $2000 each. He'd rather had bought one of those - but had hardly any money, so he took the Impala. One of the red bullet tailights fell off on the way home. He said it had a tired 348 w/ 3 speed manual, (he didnt know how to drive a stick shift). It had one 4 bbl carb on a Tri Power intake with two of the carbs in the trunk. They took it home and swapped out the 348 for a 283 and powerglide. The door handles had been shaved off but no solenoids were installed, so you had to open the window to open the doors. When the movie came out he and his friends cruised the town in the real car. He eventually reinstalled the rebuilt 348 with Tri Power, and a Turbo 350 trans, but kept the clutch pedal and Eelco foot gas pedal. The 3 speed will eventually go back in.

I think I might have read that article at some time in the past as well. It's not that the car really DID have that induction (much like the batmobile or any Bond-mobile really had any of the things the screen portrayed). It WOULD be cool to model a 6 pack of 'bergs on a W motor. Now, fuel lines and linkage? WHOA! And, would they have progressive linkage? That in itself has always been a pickle to model for me. I'm probably over-teching it. Hey! It's a model. Have FUN with it!🤙 Tom

Way back when, I didn't like the 58 Chevies but they have grown on me in the ensuing years. Your interior looks like a masterpiece already, and I'll bet the entire model will too. Gary

I believe Ray Everenham still owns the Graffiti 58. I remember him restoring it on a TV show. Lots of photos out there on the interweb.

Sounds like a likely story but ,, how would they have gotten a 4bbl onto a tri-power intake [they were only made for 2bbls] and without all the carbs in place how would it run with that huge vacuum leak?? Typo?, block off plates??

Great work on that interior!
I seem to recall reading (Rodders Journal?) that the car had since been sold and was rebuilt following the description in the movie. So it does have six Strombergs now.

While body paint is curing and sourcing parts for other projects I did some work on this 58 Impala. I'll pull some pictures and load them up. Rescribed pleat edges then masking for paint.
