As soon as I saw this on the cover of CKDeluxe about a year ago, I started dicing up some plastic. It's a Modelhaus resin chopped top attached to an AMT 5-window, with the door lines rescribed and the front clip from a Revell '40 Standard. All four fenders have been raised up on the body, giving it a sectioned look. The flush-mount 'skirts are scratchbuilt, and I have finessed the contours of them and added running boards since these pix were taken. It'll have a multi-carb 392 and traditional flat black finish. Well, did some research and it seems the flat black primer look was traditional starting in the nineties...the customs before were only in primer until the final paint job could be applied. Don't get me wrong, love the suede look, just wasn't particularly 'traditional'...heck, I have some suede paint jobs planned myself. More traditional would've been either a gloss black for early to mid-fifties or metallic or candy apple. Still, love your work, you are good! I also love the cover car you are basing it off of, a lot.

Charles Charles Thanks for the input on "traditional" black primer. I'm sort of a novice on what's truly traditional, so I'm learning as I go. I figured this would be a great place to learn, and it looks like I was right! ;D Randy

I learn too...posted this question in a group because I was planning to do a traditional custom and wanted to paint it in 'suede' but was told not normal for the time period, so I started researching and found out that the primer look was actually recent. So, if you want it to look like something in CK or some of the cool mags like that, go for it...if you want to build it as it would be in the late fifties, early sixties, either primer if it isn't 'finished' or candy apples or metallics...have fun!

I really like what you did with the exhaust tips. Nice touch! Skirts look bitchin'! I hadn't thought of raising the fenders. Might do that on my '37 Chubby!

. Great profile that is one of my favorite modifications. to raise the fenders and or section it. I know that you are building it as a replica of that car but i bet it would look pretty dang cool running a pancaked hood...just a thought. Check out Rikster's AWESOME custom car page on fotki to check out some great old kustoms. public.fotki.com/Rikster/11_car_photos/

I've already done up a sectioned hood for it, and I'll post pix as soon as I can. Still can't decide whether to use it; maybe I'll let you guys decide for me! Randy
