Here are some of my drawings. Some really early stuff: #2 pencil on paper. This isn't even signed or dated but judging from the skinny whites on reverse chromies and the upholstery, probably drawn in the early sixties. Another one without a date but figure mid to late sixties because of the dual headlights. Medium is colored pencils on black paper. Then some newer stuff. I started doing some work in 3d with 3dsmax about '94. close up detail, neat sharp edges one can get with 3d drawings. These are quick sketches done with photoshop using the airbrush tool.

Mike, that's some really impressive work! I might have seen some of them before as I have purchased some of those magazines when they came out. My favorite would be the HAMB gasser and the first two. Do you still draw? I wonder if you would be interested in doing a shirt design for TRaK? I couldn't pay anything for it, but I bet it would be worth every penny. If you are willing for the 'cause' lol....let me know. thanks for sharing!

Custom Cory, Thanks for the compliments. I checked out your work at Rikster's site. Very cool work, I like your style. I've noticed your art on the net before. Congrats on having your own space on Rikster's site, pretty exclusive club IMHO. Concerning the Roth books, I only did that one cover art for the Roth books. What happened was in the 1960's I was helping a friend who was displaying his triumph dragster at the Oakland Roadster Show. He didn't want his dragster sitting alone in the show space. He wanted to fancy up his display. What I did was fill up the empty space by displaying a bunch of my drawings around his Triumph dragster. Roth was at the show that year showing the yellow fang in a big booth. Roth came by my friend's dragster display and liked that bike drawing I did. So Roth bought the picture from me at the car show. I never worked for Roth in LA. He then reduced down the original drawing (which was about 18" x 24") to use on the California Choppers mag cover. Here attached is an interesting set of pics. On the left is the original cover art I did, and then on the right a Roth decal that was based on my original chopper drawing. One of the Roth studio artists added to my original concept. You can see the artist added a cool beatnik rider and did a reverse from black to white on the background. Changes needed to make a decal work. Can't have a riderless bike going down the road. When I sold the picture to Roth at the show I remember some of our conversation. Roth asked me, "Do you know what ellipse guides are? Well, you should get some". In that california choppers cover art the front wheel is not quite correct, sorta out of round. That out of round wheel bothered him. I guess with Roth you could go free form, anything goes with vehicle designs but Roth felt that the wheels had to be very "formal", technical, correctly drawn. If you look at the decal drawing with the rider, you can see someone redrew the front wheel and the "lumpiness" is taken out and it's really a right on, correctly angled, ellipse shape.

Thats a great story on the chopper art! When iI was about 9 or 10 I bought that Roth book at a car show and when I got it home I immediately traced it. I would always draw motorcycles like that drawing, wide forks , skinny tires etc. for years. Then I kinda got out of drawing bikes , but your the guy I use to copy!
