Tough one to call, obviously it's a lowrider but they were definitely built like this pre 1969. Only thing that might be questionable is that the tyres look quite low profile, bit on the small side for pre '69 maybe?
Great paint though! If anyone does object I'd ask, would you still say no if it was all one colour?
Be interesting to see what everyone else thinks, I can't quite decide.

I agree on the tires having a smidge small sidewall, but the rest sure looks like vintage traditional So-Cal/San Jose Lowrider! I think the paint, cragars, and rabbit ears make it!

Gary you are one of the people I know that builds su ch badass "traditional" lowriders and I really do admire them. Your model IMHO is TRaKable even if it is a lowrider and even though the tires are low sidewalled. I am thinking we need to draw some new lines on what kind of lowrider can be TRaKable. Take a look at some of the magazines today like Deadend..they showcase lowriders and kustoms. Back in the pre 70 days of lowriding, they were really considered kustoms. I also can't help to think of the car club Los Boulevardos which really has a traditional approach, but yet their slogan says a lot about them. "Too late to be traditional" "Too lowrider to be custom" "Too custom for lowrider" losboulevardos.blogspot.com/To me.....your Caprice falls right in there somewhere and I don't have a problem with that being shown here on TRaK. In the beginning here at TRaK, I said no low profile tires and when I said that I was leaning towards the low-wide types seen on DONKS or on Mini Trucks or on some of the "crappy" wheel sets found in kits and after market. Some tires made are just shit, they look like a piece of garden hose painted black...very little realism or detail to be considered even decent. I want feedback on this and I think it's time we discussed this subject and sort out what exactly can be posted when it comes to pre 70 lowrider/kustoms. I personally feel builds like Gary's here do fit and fall into what we do here as it's pre 70 and it's kustom as much as a car with hubcaps and same paint job. I am sure I replied to your last build and made adjustments to the guidelines to allow for it. There is always room to grow and learn here, because I know for a fact we don't have the complete TRaKable side of auto down to nails yet. I will not consider changing the wire wheel rule though. Straight laces on any car, not TRaKable. This isn't about the Cragars either, they are TRaKable and always have been. This post comes down to the style of the car and the sidewall of the tires. What do you think?

First, great build and great paint! The only thing I guestion are the tires, they look too low-profile to me for the time period. And if that's the only issue and it's borderline, let it stand.

I think most of us know the difference between a lowered custom and a lowrider, but for me, lowriders have always been a branch off of customs (or is it the other way around?). Custom paint (and this one is super!) and interiors tend to usually be a lot more elablorate on a lowrider. But as for my opinion, it's always been mainly the wheels and tires that denote a lowrider vs a custom or quite frequently the murals or the 3 wheeling stuff. To me, this model is a lowrider. If the same model had taller/wider tires, I'd call it a custom.
So, I think the big question is whether lowriders are TRAK material (I would say they are or can be). A lot of the ones Eric has done could be considered lowriders, so it's up to Bob and the moderators to decide the general TRAKability of lowriders. Pat Ganahl, the best editor Rod & Custom magazine ever had, considers them within the custom category, even if some car buffs don't agree with him.
I also don't think modelers should change the style of what they like to build just to fit a forum. I know there's other TRAK members building non-TRAKable stuff and showing it elsewhere.
i think it looks great, Gary!

I like the car and most of what I've seen him build but the tires do seem a little small, but I still wish I could paint like that!!!!

I am sure the main thing is the tires.....I knew it would be.
My question is .... Should we allow them tires? Or is it too hard to decipher at times which ones are which? I can tell off the bat from looking, because I built lowriders for a long time.....but is it as easy for a lot of other guys to know?
What was the lowest profile whitewall found back pre 70?

This thread represents exactly what I love about TRaK, intelligent people that respect each other's knowledge and talent having a thought provoking discussion.
And we've all got one thing in common, we all wish we could paint like Gary.

Hey Bob, when you said "suck badass" you got it right. I was in NorCal in the 60's and Gary's type of kustoms were quite popular. Being around hot rod and street machine guys, I hid my love for the lowrider style. Having seen and loved a bunch of these at the Grand National Roadster show, there is nothing that is not traditional in this style, its just that the la bamba guys had a different version of traditional kustom. Combined with Gary's skill, I dont think theres any way to deny these kustoms as trakable. Sheesh, if we allow 20" halibrands, and wacky proportions on some rods in the vein of saying could have been vs would have been, Gary wins. OK Im done. Have I vented enough?

I don't like those tires anymore than I like most things when they reach comical proportions, that said, I'm happy to overlook the tires and wheels, for that matter, so I can see the custom work and the paint (which is STUNNING!), I mean WTF do I know, I'm from redneck country California, where contrasting paint and Western Auto 'Baby Moons' were considered 'Kustom'! Maybe I learn something in the process, Bring it on!
