What is the difference between the front ends on the 2 '40 Ford kits? And I assume you are talking about Revell kits? (both) I have never built or owned a Revell kit of this car, but they look like good kits!! If I would have seen the post Dennis L. had put up, I would have scooped those up. "Always a day late, and a million dollars short"
This should be a kool build Ed, I do love those '40 Fords!! David S.

"Always a day late, and a million dollars short" This should be a kool build Ed, I do love those '40 Fords!! David S. To start, AMT's '40 Ford coupe is a Deluxe model. Sometime in the '90's Revell came out with a '40 Ford Deluxe convertible kit; and then after that they tooled up a '40 Ford coupe; but it was the Standard model (different grille and hood); not a Deluxe like their convertible or AMT's coupe. So, I took the front fenders/cowl, and hood from Revell's '40 convertible and grafted it into Revell's '40 Standard coupe body to turn it into a Deluxe model.

David, these would both be the Revell kits. The convertible is a Deluxe and the coupe kit is a Standard. They have different grilles and hoods. Apparently, the only other difference is that the wiper mounts are on the cowl on the Deluxe, but on the Standard they're on the windshield header.
For comparison, the old AMT coupe is a Deluxe. If you put it side-by-side with the Revell kits, the Revell kit is noticeably more...rounded, I guess I would say, especially in the front fenders.
*Edit, lol you guys beat me to it.
*Second Edit: Hey Bernard, are those cool bumper spade end-caps available anywhere?? I'm not sure I've ever seen them before!!

Too cool, Ed. I tried that conversion, myself some years back. No idea what happened to the body I put together.

I'm not sure I've ever seen them before!! The Revell coupe is more rounded everywhere (like the most important area....around the window openings........AMT's are flat sided) except one spot.......and that is the back crown of the roof. I feel Revell dropped the ball here; where AMT got it right. I may very well attempt to graft the back portion of the AMT roof into the Revell body to correct it like I started doing on another similar project. I had grafted the Revell front roof portion/windshield area/cowl, and entire side window area into an AMT '40 body. The 'hump' in the back of the roof just looks more 'right' to my eyes; and the Revell coupe roof looks like the back is angled forward (or laid down) quite a bit more than it should be. My only main hang up might be the transition into the trunk area since both bodies appear to differ in shape from each more in this area.

Wondering aloud: Did they ever build a Standard convertible, or was the convertible so upscale that it only came in Deluxe trim?

I believe they did make a Standard model convertible in '40. I know there was a Deluxe model in '39; which would have had the same '39 grille that comes in the AMT '39/'40 Ford Tudor sedan kit. The '40 Standard grille was similar to the '39 Deluxe grille; but still different.

To add...the 39 Deluxe had a grill very similar to the 40 Standard. and the 39 Standard had a grill similar to the 38 Deluxe and headlight styling, carried over from the 37

Thanks for the info Bernard, Ed, and Chris! I didn't realize the exact differenes on the 2 models. And looking at the photos makes me think that grill on the standard model kinda looks like the '39 model, doesn't it!?! And Eric, that is a good question! Also the truck is a standard also isn't it? You know that Revell had pure genius in their choice to make the 2 kits that way, because now you good folks will buy both kits for just this reason!!
