I love rivet counters. They inspire me to build better. One of the reasons I enjoy this forum. You guys know your stuff and are really into the subjects.

Last night I discovered that the Kelsey Hayes wire wheels in the reissued 32 Vicky (pictured at left) are way better than the ones from the AMT 32 roadster (on right). The spoke detail is much better, not thick and filled in close to the rim. The outer rim is also less wide and clunky. The back will still need to be hogged out to accept the Revell 29 front wheel backs but the Vicky casting is shallower and generally more realistic bringing the wheel back closer to the tire. The only downside is the Vicky wheels do not have the locator notch that positions the 2 halves correctly, I'll have to eyeball the spoke placement when attaching both wheel halves.

Huh, I has assumed they were exactly the same between the two kits! Thanks for the info and clear photos. I'll have to pull out my AMT gluebombs and the new 32 Vicky kit and do a little comparison to see for myself.

From memory, the ones in the '34 pickup are a bit finer still. I usually just chuck them in the spares box, so someone else might be able to confirm.

I assumed the same Chris, until I started inspecting both. Stu, the 34 pickup wires are nice but they aren't the same style. The centers have smaller caps. I prefer the larger hubcap wire wheels.

Ah, details. I hadn't noticed that difference, but as I said, they go straight to the parts box... As your were then, I'm interested to see how this develops.

I like the wheels from the '34 kit, but I too never realized the difference on the others. So glad you added that little tidbit!! Here are '34 pick up wheels to compare-

Wheels and tires are the thing I fuss over most at the beginning of a build. Last night I came across some BF Goodrich Silvertown tires that work really good as rears with the Armstrongs from the 34 pickup for fronts. The tread pattern is similar and the size difference is what I was looking for. AND the Vicky wires fit them both! No idea where the Silvertown's came from, Monogram 59 Caddy perhaps? stay tuned, pics and update forthcoming.

I am obssessed with my wheel combos and how they work on a build myself!! More time is spent on that than I do on any other parts of the build. Like the wheels for the '34 pick up had to be made wider to fit in the big Goodyear slicks for the build pictured above. Also I shaved down each spoke just a little bit to make the wires look more open. Very time consuming for sure, but it was kinda fun!!

Some progress was made this weekend, decisions made, not much to look at but progress none the less. I finalized the wheel and tire combo: The wheels are the Kelsey Hayes wires from the AMT 32 Vicky. The front tires are Armstrongs from the Linberg 34 pickup and the rear tires are BF Goodrich Silvertowns from the parts box. I'm not sure what kit they are from. The whitewall insert will be painted black. The backs of the front wheels had to be hogged out and a piece of styrene tube slid in as a sleeve to insure a good fit with the 29 wheel backs. Thin strips of styrene were added to the rear rims to get a snug fit with the Goodrich Silvertowns. I then turned my attention to the suspension. In an effort to keep it circa 36-38 I will be lowering the stance without frame modifications or dropped axle (I did experiment with the dropped axle option but fabricating manual breaks with a dropped axle drove me crazy). To get the car lower I removed springs from both the front and rear spring packs. It will still sit high but as low as early methods will allow in scale. Springs before: Springs After: Mechanical brakes are next! stay tuned.

The tire combo looks good. Now to figure out where those BFG's came from so I can grab some.
