Outlaw, that chop idea has been in my mind. (and that assumes I HAVE a mind doesn't it?) Would the top have been chopped if the car was built in, say, 1961? More feedback on this subject is welcome! Gary

awesome can't wait to see how ya do it! I also forgot something , I didn't mention one thing about the drop... The front bottom leading edge of the interior tub will meet the top of the tranny. (you will not see this when it's built) If you shave the tranny down a little on the top.....it will also make more clearance. I also....was not thinking when I should have told you that I removed the tabs from the bumpers so that the chassis would go up just that much more....making it even lower. You will see the grille can still be glued to the body behind the headlights without the tabs. ONE more thing.....the glass will fit up in the roof pretty snug, until you put the interior tub in. You should put the glass in, then test fit the interior tub w/dashboard installed before putting it all together. If not, the front glass is actually too tall......which will push the front of the interior tub downwards when it's all together. I found out the hard way about that. So....you can easily grab your dremel and take that bottom edge of the windsheild off for the dash to meet up and not be pushed down. I know I just opened a can of worms....but there was a bit of work into lowering mine lol I wish I had thought of this stuff lastnight....but I was tied up with this moving crap on my mind.

That shape is so slinky....ought to be beautiful as a custom. I can't wait to see it.

Very slick looking. It'll be interesting to see if those Exner flanks need some trim to break them up once you get her up on her wheels. The bottom trim is a great idea and may very well do the trick. ;D

Awesome to finally see a Mopar custom again!
Whether you choose to chop it or not, here's a tip: The JoHan DeSoto windows are infamous for their horrible fit, but the windows from JoHan's '62 Chrysler 300 (either original or Modelhaus replacements) will drop right in.

Chris, I was looking through my Modelhaus catalog last night wondering if Don's vac-formed glass might fit better than the stock glass. I've been putting together an order for them anyway so I'll add the glass to it. Thanks both Bob and Chris for your input. Gary

Cool project for sure and you've got the skills to do it justice by the look of the repair on the front fender.
These cars are tough to chop, however, given the compound curved glass, and in any case, have a great roofline right out of the box that chopping won't really improve. But, one thing Johan didn't quite right on their Desoto and Chrysler... they missed a molding that is recessed under the driprail inside the side window opening. There's also a black weatherstrip that's visible when the windows are down. Adding these things and reducing the height of the vent window frames goes a long way to making this kit more realistic, in addition to effectively reducing the size of the window opening to give the model more of the sleek profile of the 1/1.
Also, if you're ordering replacement windows, remember that starting in '61 Chrysler did away with the compound curved windshield used on the '60s. The glass from the Johan '61 and '62 Chryslers will fit, but the windshield won't be curved from top to bottom.

I have not tried to do this, but wonder if the chassis from an ertl 68 road runner or revell 67 Coronet/GTX would work under this car? The newer chassis is much more detailed and fairly similar in set up to a 60 Mopar. The wheelbase is different on the 1:1 cars but in scale with Jo-han's lack of accuracy may not be noticeable. It may be possible to make the scale adjustment with a simple filler panel on the newer chassis.
Also on the body. I have always thought that the rear of these cars just begs for a rolled pan to finish the natural curve of the entire rear of the car. Possibly a split rear bumper to complement the shape?
Up front I would consider using a chrome grille surround with black mesh as a grille - somewhat of a sinister open mouth look. I am considering this on a 60 New Yorker I am working on right now. I had looked at using the custom tube grille from the AMT 51 Chevy kit too as it is quite close in shape to the Chrysler/DeSoto grille shape.
The body would benefit from some subtle, simple scallops on the hood, trunk and body sides. Not too many, but just enough to make those Exner lines flow. Add some chrome reverse wheels with chrome bullet centers with some mid to wide whitewalls and you have yourself one cool early 60's custom!
Nice car and watching your progress.
John

I've got 'er up on tires, but the stance isn't set in stone. It may change before final assy.. I'm paying attention to Bob and froghawk, so I'm making some minor changes here and there. Here's today's picture. Anybody got any other thoughts on paint color? Me and scallops.........forget it! Gary

Lookin' good so far. Stance is hard to judge witout the front bumper. Whitewalls would help the car I think.

Years ago I used the chassis from the MPC 67 Charger under this body and it fit with just a bit of trimming and the wheelbase was dead on. This is one of my grail kits, can't wait to see more.
