Well, I've decided I'm going to build this as a '40 standard, instead of a '39 Deluxe. Since I was going to remove the windshield wipers anyway, that problem is taken care of. The "39" grille that comes in the kit is correct for a '39 Deluxe, but a little off for a '40 standard. That's o.k. by me since I like the '39 Deluxe grille better. I don't care for the design of the '39 Deluxe dash; nor did I care to scratch build it. So, I have to make up my mind whether or not to use the '40 Deluxe or '40 standard guage panel inserts that came with the Rep & Min. dash I have. I was thinking of going with the '40 Standard guages; but Rep & Min's is a little off. The Duluxe version is correct however; and would sit on top of the glass panel nearest I can tell. They designed the '40 standard the same way; which is not correct. The 'glass' is suppose to sit on top of the painted guage panel, not underneath like the Deluxe. The way the '40 standard panel was designed makes it a little difficult since it has a curvature to it. It's suppose to be flat; but have chrome trim around it. So, maybe I'll just use the '40 standard guage panel insert and let the accuracy slide........not sure yet. Also, since I was leaning towards using the '40 headlights I don't have to worry about it not being correct for a '39 Deluxe. I was also going to leave the second small piece of trim off of the hoods sides too. I'll be leaving the trim off of the bottom of the front of the hood above the grille; even though that's not correct for a '39 Deluxe grille. The '40 Standard grille had the upper trim as part of the grille from what I've been able to reference. So, I'll just build it like your typical hot rodder did back then......swapping parts from various years; and removing trim to get the look I want! Lol! Ed

Hey Ed, I'm just trying to help out a little. Sand off the wipers before you paint it. '39 Fords had the wipers mounted ABOVE the windshield.

Thanks; but I already addressed this issue. I am going to build it as a '40 Standard; and seeing how it's a drag car I am just going to do away with the wipers all together. I thought that perhaps wipers were mandatory during the early gas class rules; but I didn't see them on the early version of the Stone, Woods, & Cook coupe......so, I guess I'm good to go! Ed

I've been racking my brain trying to come up with a suitable set of door handles and window cranks for the coupe. In my search for more information pertaining to how Steve B. did his, I learned that he mastered one and then cast it for his builds......not exactly what I wanted to do. Although, I would like to see a 'how to' on how you made your's Steve! Lol! I also did not want to wait while I placed an order with Rep. & Min. Anyway, I came across just one window crank that looked detailed enough (from my parts bin); but did not want to wait days to make a mold and get a casting. So, I decided to look through my dad's old mold book to see if he had happened to mold '40's style door handles and window cranks at one time.......no luck! However, it dawned on me to make an open pour of the door handles and window cranks from a couple door panel molds that he had made and see how they turn out. I just got done pouring the ones for the '57 Chevy 4dr. hardtop, and '55 Merc. 2dr. hardtop. Hopefully, I'll be able to shape them up a little bit and then Alclad them. I'll let you know how they turn out! Ed

I got the door handles and window cranks mounted on straight pins for ease of thinning them down, painting them, and mounting them to the door panels. You have to be real careful not to drill right through them though! LOL! Ed Hosted on Fotki

Those door panels look great - really nice work. Are you going to open up the doors? Would be a shame to keep all that nice detail hidden...
