Having just finished two heavily modified hot rod models I decided before getting back into another one of those that it would be fun to do something quick and easy. I had also recently purchased the really nicely done resin tuck & roll interior set for AMT's 1953 Ford F100 from my pal Ed at Drag City Casting and thought it would be cool to actually put it to use. This model will be a couple of firsts for me. 1) It will be the first 1950's Pickup I've ever built and 2) Will be the first curbside model I've ever built! Here's the basic pile of parts I've selected:Chrome-reverse wheels from AMT's most recent 1936 Ford Coupe/Roadster kit.
AMT parts pack double pinstripe tires and narrow street slicks.
Drag City Casting tuck & roll interior set.
Chrome 3-spoke steering wheel of unknown origin.
Custom grill from Revell's 1948 Ford Custom Coupe.
Headlights from Revell's 1949 Mercury.
Revell 1948 Ford taillights.
Chrome side exhaust pipes, smooth tailgate, rear rolled pan and bed cover from the '53 pickup kit. Here's the idea for the grill and headlights. I will cut holes in the egg crate backing (which comes in the kit) so that the lights fit flush. I want this to look like a simple home-brewed setup, not dramatically custom like the optional grills that come in the kit. Here's a closeup of the Drag City Casting interior pieces for those of you who having been living under a rock and haven't seen it before. Of particular note are the inclusion of door panels, which there are none included in the '53 Pickup kit. I'm hoping to knock this one out in short order, no more than a month. Hopefully.

Love it! I can see what it will look like finished already Oddly enough...I kind of like the Merc headlights "floating" along with the grille, exactly as they are in the mockup! Nerf bars? Full bumpers?

Full bumpers? Thanks, man! No nerfs or bumpers. Gonna fill the holes and leave it smooth like the rear will be.

UPDATE! The more I looked at my initial grill idea the more I just don’t like it. I got on Google and looked at tons of ‘53-‘55 F100 pictures to get grill ideas and found that what I really like is a smoothed out stock grill. I snuck out to the garage and went to it. Below is what I ended up with. I like this WAY better. Also noticeable is that I shaved the hood and door handles.

Nice pile of parts! I like the new direction of the grille better too! This should be a quick and easy build for you! I still can't get over you not stuffing an engine in it though! LOL! Did you already rob the early Chrysler mill out of it?

Did you already rob the early Chrysler mill out of it? It’s a Desoto engine but no motor for this one. Hood will be glued shut. Super simple, just for fun. And I want to actually use that neat tuck & roll! Then you can pimp pictures of it on your Facebook page!!!

Ironically, I only have around 6 of these interiors left in stock now. Since I ended up making new molds for the door panels early on to test out a new mold design I ended up with three pair of door panel molds with only two seat molds. I've exhausted both seat molds a month or two ago; but the door panel molds are still in good shape. The plan is to continue casting up door panels as time permits and see how many sets I end up with before the molds quit. This will determine how many seat molds I make again down the line. It might just be one fresh seat mold; or this interior could possibly be shelved for good........too early to tell.

LOL So the interior was a good seller then? Have you seen any finished truck models using it?

The new grille looks much better! It's hard to come up with a different grille that looks right on these trucks. I've tried three times to come up with something different for mine and I always go back to the Wildcat grille. I tried a similar grille to your first one. But, I used the Olds grille from the '48 Ford. I thought it would look cool. But, I didn't like it. If I ever attempt another grille, I think I'll do a full tube grille.
