It's looking good Dennis! I like the modifications you've made so far. Looks like you're planning on grafting in some louvers on the hood. The slicks on the rear look out of place though. And they're giving it a little too much rake. Stick on a pair that match the front and see what it looks like. I always appreciate your feedback, Roger. In this case I really like the street slicks and hot rod rake. I'm way more of a hot rod guy than a custom guy and wanted a cross section of the two. That, and I just love the tire set.

Honestly Dennis, I was feeling the stock-ish grille a lot more. It fits better with your intended hot-rod influence, as opposed to mild or full custom. While some of your mods so far are custom, they're more about simply improving the stock lines.

I like this build! I like both grilles and for me it doesn’t matter wich one you use. How about doing something like this to the fenders? That is something I would have done to get a better flow and less of a gap between the grille and the fender.

Given the hot rod rake and cheater slicks I'm thinking it needs to have a thick, angry grill. something with teeth. Like an angry dog ready to pounce. What if you used the stock set up but grafted in some mercury teeth inside the top and bottom bars. Here's a rough mock up to illustrate

I have a bunch of thes Pu's like 8+ or so.. and have built like the same amount over the years.. this is a hard question and I've tried every other grille in my collection.. and tried to combine several. So far stylewise I think the extras from 61-63 Pu's are close.. but I have not seen a "original" centerpart with dualquads yet?.. with that said I'm not quite happy with none of them above.. kind of happy with the original, without teeth.

IMO, the modified stock grille suits the truck better and fits with the hot rod vibe. If you want to make it a little more custom, remove the center didvider section. But, I think it's fine as is. I hate to admit it. But, it's hard to beat the look of the Wildcat grille for a custom. I've tried and failed three times! Someday, I want to cut one apart and flip the headlight buckets so they fit the shape of the stock opening better.

i like the stock grille, after the shave, it's given the truck a mild custom look ! the only thing that needs changed is the taillights need to sit flush with the fenders ! it looks great !

I think you nailed the stance/rake perfectly! Nothing wrong with a little 'meat' under the ass end to hint of something lurking under the hood.......even in a 'parts hauler'!
I too dig the modified stock grille the best.

I agree with the others that the stock-ish grille is cool. The Wildkat grille is neat too, but just so familiar! I dig the slicks, it's a very late-50s/early 60s thing to do.
Travis--the Mercury grille is pretty heavily V'd, so it doesn't quite match the flat opening in the F100. I've tried!

The Wildcat was as near-perfect a Barris design as they ever did in an elaborated custom. It's hard to beat even if, as Chris says, it's overfamiliar. I would at least consider it, especially on the basis of the variations that Marcus has suggested. My friend Raul Perez did a superb version of this model which was the pickup half of of a showcar and hauler set called the Raptor. It's now in the model car museum in Salt Lake City. Other notable features were a mild 2 1/2" chop and a wedged section taken out of the hood. While it's a modern custom with oversized wheels and some of the details are probably not as tasteful as you would like because it repeats details from the showcar, it's still a skilled and ambitious full custom. Here's a link to the MCM page showing it. www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/18106-the-raptor-hauler-and-trailer/?tab=comments#comment-157620

Thank you to everyone who weighed-in on the grill situation, i appreciate it! I have decided to keep the smoother stock grill and move forward with the hot rod vibe. UPDATE!Where I last left off I noticed after getting the truck up on all 4 that when the bed assembly was set on the frame and located by it's two locating pins that there was a huge gap to the back of the cab, between the running boards and fenders and the rear wheels/tires weren't centered in the fenders. After measuring I found the whole bed assembly needed to move forward 1/16". This amount would also center the wheels and tires. Below shows the problem: To fix I filled the original alignment holes in the top/rear of the frame and drilled new ones 1/16" forward. The result! I did have to do a little shaping on the ends of the running boards so that the fenders would fit up properly. A couple of you noticed the lines laid out on the hood and figured that I'd be adding louvres, and Chris very intuitively suggesting that they'd be harvested from a pair of Revell '32 Ford hood sides. Well, you were right! I didn't really care for the kits bed cover. I felt like it made the back too heavy looking as it stacks on top of the bed. I ditched it and made a flush fitting cover which will be painted an accenting color and I'm pretty sure will get a mural/caricature type decal that I really like. With that, the extent of the fabrication is complete and I can prep it for paint!

Dennis it's too late, for my thought, but i'll give it anyway. i think the taillight bezels should be vertical and recessed, and the lenses should be flush with the fenders ! just my 2 cents !
